Glyntaff Crematorium and Cemetery

The cemetery opened in 1874 .

The  crematorium opened in 1924, and hence was the first crematorium in Wales. The records are fully available from that date, computerised from 1982, a total of over 90,000 cremations.

The registers have been indexed by the Gla FHS (see next row), a website for the crematorium is being constructed.

Merthyr Tydfil. There is a computerised index of burials in all the Merthyr  area cemeteries. It's not complete yet,  some 58,000 to date  out of total 175,000 [9/2000], the non computerised records are also available. The system also shows any other occupants of the grave. The information is given as a print out on all occupants including age, residence at time of death, next of kin & even the officiating minister & his parish. Of course it gives the grave number so that you can locate it when you go there. (The grave numbers are engraved on the headstones so even if you don't have a stone you can locate the burial area) The service costs £20 for a search [Aug 2001], free if you call and do it personally.

The separate cemeteries /opening dates, which are all still in use, are;

Pant, 25 May 1860[but unindexed records from 1849];  Cefn, 16 April 1859 ;   Ffrwd, 20 Nov 1905 ;   Pontycapel, 18 June 1982 ;

Aberfan, 6 April 1876 ;      Bryntaf, 6 Jan 1915 ;     Beechgrove, 21 Aug 1888 ;

Graigfargoed, 15 Sept 1924 ;  Capel Fach, 19 Jan 1994.
