John Thomas Dougherty Note*: BIOGRAPHY: Came to Bethel in 1856 as a single man along with Pratts,Mitchells and Dyers. According to Deloris Golden 'John was born into alarge family whose circumstances were very poor. He did not finishschool, did not know his parents names or when he was born. His DeathCert. says he was born in 1836 and parents came from Ireland/Scotland.John left home before the age of 12. He first lived with variousneighbors as a helper on their farms and eventually travelled north tolumber camps and became a logger. He went as far north as Canada andMaine before coming back to Minnesota where he married MargaretDyer.After marriage they moved to Payette, Idaho. Life was not easy for thefamily. They lived in three rooms and a shed. On one side of the home wasa Chinese laundry and on the other side a vinegar factory. The back ofthe house was bordered by railroad tracks and a 'slew' '. He moved to Adrian with his family three years ago, where heresided until a month ago when he moved to Ofden Township, where hisdeath occurred March 22, 1923. He was 53 years of age. In 1893 Mr.Dougherty was united in marriage to Miss Henrietta Strong. To this unionfour children were born, Mable Crepan of Fidley, Minn., Mable Dill andBertha and Edward Dougherty of Minneapolis, Minn. His wife died in1902. Dec 26, 1903 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Esther Driscoll.Three children were born to this union, Florence Chorman and ClarenceDougherty of Adrian and Ada, who died in infancy. ........ burial inOakwood Cemetery.
