Note*: Known as 'Squire Jim', he was a Justice of the Peace, and for two terms a member of the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly in Fredericton, New Brunswick. He built a brick house on the homestead which he inherited from his father at Sackville, New Brunswick. On one occasion while on a journey from Sackville to Fredericton to attend a session of the Legislature, the vehicle in which he was traveling broke through the ice on the Saint John River. He was rescued, but an associate traveling with him was drowned.
