JOHN WAKEFIELD: John Wakefield, the progenitor of the Maine Families of Wakefields, was born in England. He died February 15, 1676 and is buried in Biddeford, Maine. The first American record of him is the date, January 1, 1637, when at a Town Meeting held at Salem, Mass, he was assessed fifteen shillings as an inhabitant of Marblehead, Colony of Massachusetts Bay. First record of him in Maine was 1641 he settled in Wells Maine.

February 5, 1674;  Father wrote will - "Weak in body..." names wife Meribah and leaves her household stuff to dispose of to the children - she to receive 1/3 of the stock and moveables.  His eldest son Joseph to have the house lot, housing, saw mill, corn mill and appurtenences.  2/3 part of the stock, oxen, houseing cows, with other cattle when "he hath attained the age of 22 years he paying to my son Nathan 5 pounds, Jonathan 5 pounds, son Job 5 pounds, son Daniell 5 pounds when they reach 21..."  Daughter Mary and Johanna, Tabbatha and Hannah to have 10 pounds each when they reach 18.  Nathan and Jonathan received all lands and meadowa at Mary Land to divide when they are 21.  Job and David to receive land at Ogunquett with 7 acres of marsh bought from John Barrett to divide at age 21.  Son Joseph was to pay 10 pounds a year for 3 years to maintain the small children.  The estate was to remain with his wife for her to manage and improve for the maintenence of her and the children until Joseph reached 22.  Meribah, Joseph and Nathan named executors.  Brother Francis senior was a witness.  (Maine Wills)
