Return to LUDWIG WALLNER in the DESCENDANTS OF ANDREAS WALLNER

                              LUDWIG WALLNER

45. Ludwig5 Wallner (Josef4, Andreas3, Andreas2, Andreas1) was born 18 September 1874 in Pastetten Bavaria33, and died 10 March 1960 in Ridgewood, Queens Co., New York. He married Wilhelmina Wentzlow Abt. 1900. She was born Abt. 1882, and died 27 January 1910 in Brooklyn, NY.

Ludwig Wallner was the second son of Josef and Elisabeth (Brunner) Wallner, born on 18 September 1874. Eight months after his older brother and sister, Josef and Johanna, immigrated to the United States, Ludwig also arrived in New York, on 8 June 1892. On the ship's record of the Westernland he is listed as age 18, although he was actually 17 years old at the time. He was processed at the new immigration factility that had opened 5 months earlier: Ellis Island.  The Ellis Island information records Ludwig as "Ludwig Wollner".

What the immigration experience would have been like at Ellis Island  (Off-site)

The oral tradition of the family is that Ludwig had wanted to go to Texas, but upon his arrival in New York, he found that the family there had arranged not only a job for him, but a marriage as well. Wilhelmina Wentzlow was said to have been "very young", and records indicate that at the time of Ludwig's arrival, she was approximately ten years old. Although unhappy about the circumstances, Ludwig did not go to Texas. He remained in New York and waited for Wilhelmina Wentzlow to reach the age when she would be old enough to be married.

His name Ludwig was "Americanized" to Louis, by Ludwig himself according to family tradition. He was a blacksmith by trade, employed as an ironworker with Thomas W. Kiley and Co., 57 Grand Street, in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn NY, where his brother Josef was also employed. Kiley & Co. were hardware wholesalers and jobbers which probably made tools such as chisels, pry-bars, crowbars and wrenches, etc.

In 1898 Louis Wallner was a witness to his brother Josef's first marriage to Elfrieda Huch in St. Joseph's Church of Yorkville, 404 E. 87th Street in New York City NY.

In the 1900 census, Louis was still single, and living with his sister Johanna (Wallner) Dollack and her husband Henry, and their daughters Elizabeth and Lillian, at 210 Wyckoff Avenue in Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY. It is believed that shortly after this time, when Wilhelmina Wentzlow reached the age of 18 years old, and Ludwig was 26, that they finally were married. Louis and Wilhelmina's daughter Johanna Wilhelmina was born 3 October 1902

Ludwig was naturalized on 6 January 1905 in Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY, the witness was his brother Josef. He and Wilhelmina were living at 24 Ten Eyck Street in Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY at the time. On 28 July 1906 their daughter Anna Elizabeth was born.

Another oral tradition of the family is that Louis' daughters attended the Our Lady of Lourdes Parish school. The Parish was contacted in 1996, and advised that they were unable to locate any church record on the Wallner family, or that of Johanna (Wallner) O'Kane, or Anna E. Wallner, and that the school records, which start in 1921, were also checked and no records were found.

Louis and Wilhelmina (Wentzlow) Wallner were said to have had a son that died at birth, and that Wilhelmina died in childbirth with twins. Wilhelmina died at 28 years old, on 27 January 1910. The oral tradition of the family is that when Wilhelmina died, her mother moved in with Louis to take care of his two young daughters. When Wilhelmina's mother died sometime after 1911, Louis' mother, Elisabeth (Brunner) Wallner, who was recently widowed, came to the US to care for his daughters. Asked why Louis never remarried, a family member said that his favorite daughter Anna never wanted him to. In the 1920 census, Louis is renting the residence at 96 Sackman Street in Brooklyn, Kings Co. NY. This was previously the residence of Louis' sister Johanna (Wallner) Dollack, whose husband Henry had died in a year earlier. It is assumed that Johanna rented this residence to her brother. Enumerated with Louis, age 46, are his two daughters, Johnna, age 18, and Anna, age 13, and Louis' mother, Elisabeth (Brunner) Wallner, age 68.

Louis was very dapper, and wore tails to dances and parties. He was also known to be "holier than the Pope" and was angry with his brother Josef because Josef's second wife, Wilhelmina Kraft, was not Catholic. Evidently the brothers made up their differences. In the period 1930 to 1960 Louis was living at old 2230 Hughes Street in Ridgewood, Queens Co., NY (the new address was changed to 59-20 68th Street), which it is believed he purchased from his brother Josef Wallner.

Louis Wallner died at age 85, on 10 March 1960, at his residence on 68th Street in Ridgewood, Queens Co., NY. His funeral service was held at St. Matthias R.C. Church, 58-15 Catalpa Avenue, Ridgewood, Queens Co., NY. The Peter J. Geis Funeral Home, 57-34 Catalpa Avenue in Ridgewood handled the arrangements. He was interred in Section 14, Range Q, Plot 24, No. 4 at St. Johns Cemetery, 80-01 Metropolitan Avenue, Middle Village, NY on 12 March 1960, with his wife Wilhelmina. The records of St. John's Cemetery verify that he was buried in the family plot purchased by Henry Dollack in 1919, but the large monument at this location, which includes the names of 20 family members, is not inscribed with Louis Wallner's name.

Wilhelmina Wentzlow:
Wilhelmina Wentzlow was born in 1882, and was called "Minnie". When she was approximately ten years old, a marriage was arranged with Ludwig Wallner, who was eight years older. Because of her age at the time, she was married 8 years later, sometime around 1900. (See Ludwig Wallner). Wilhelmina and her husband had two daughters, Johanna Wilhelmina and Anna Elizabeth, along with a son who died at birth. Minnie died in childbirth, at age 28, on 27 January 1910, and is interred in St. Johns Cemetery, Middle Village, NY.

                                         Anna Wallner

Anna Elizabeth Wallner was the second daughter of Ludwig and Wilhelmina (Wentzlow) Wallner. She was born on 28 July 1906 in Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY, and baptized in Most Holy Trinity Church, 138 Montrose Avenue, Brooklyn NY on 12 August 1906. At the time of the baptism, her parents' address is listed as 24 Ten Eyck St. Her godmother was her Aunt Johanna (Wallner) Dollack, her father's sister. This baptismal record of "Anna Elisabetha" is the only record of the Wallner or Dollack family found in Most Holy Trinity Church's records. Anna attended Our Lady of Lourdes Parish school. In 1930 Miss Anna E. Wallner is listed as living at 2320 Hughes Street in Ridgewood, Queens Co., NY (now 59-20 68th Avenue) and the files of the Greater Ridgewood Historical Society also indicate that in the Spring of 1930 she had a telephone installed, and still had the phone at this address in mid 1932. She married Edwin B. Austin sometime after 1935, as her signature in Irma Wallner's Wedding Book is still "Anna Wallner". She and Edwin B. Austin did not have any children.
