Pioneer of S.L. To Observe 90th Birthday [Tuesday, 9 Nov 1948]
Plain, ordinary living and keeping busy are just as good means as any others to keep healthy and hearty for 90 years, according to Edward F. Guest, 3517 S. West Temple.
Mr. Guest, a native of Salt Lake City, will observe his 90th birthday anniversary Tuesday. Open house for friends and members of his family will be celebrated from 3 to 8 p.m. at his residence.
He was born Nov. 9, 1858, a son of Edward F. M. and Jane Walton Guest, who came to Utah from England in 1853. With his parents, Mr. Guest was one of the early settlers of Mill Creek.
For many years Mr. Guest was a contracting foreman for John Holt Construction Co. and aided in the construction of some of Salt Lake's large buildings, including the LDS hospital.
Later, he was associated with wagon trains which hauled coal to Salt Lake valley from Coalville over what then was a hazardous mountain pass.
He recalls vividly his experiences as a youth, hunting bear in Mill Creek canyon, where he often aided in felling timber for the winter fuel supply of Salt Lake City.
Mr. Guest married Rebecca Butterworth of East Mill Creek in Salt Lake City, Dec. 14, 1881. The couple later was sealed in the Salt Lake temple, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mrs. Guest died in 1935.
He is father of five living sons and daughters, Edward M. Guest, Twin Falls, Ida.; Mrs. Dessie Rebecca Peck, Holladay; Mrs. Verna Cowley, with whom he resides; William J. and J. Earl Guest, Salt Lake City. Also expected to be present at his birthday celebration Tuesday are many of 21 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
