Edward Guest Is Honored

One of South Salt Lake's first pioneers, Edward F. Guest, was honored at a community birthday party last night on his eighty-first birthday. [9 Nov 1939]

The party was given by friends, relatives and neighbors and held in the Miller Ward Chapel.

Born at the corner of Thirty-third South and West Temple Streets, Mr. Guest has lived in this immediate vicinity all his life. He was instrumental in organizing Miller Ward and has been an ardent booster for civic progress in that region.

Still a hearty speaker, Mr. Guest told of the development of the community and how, when he was a small lad, he would count the number of dwellings on State Street from Seventh South to Thirty-third on his 10 fingers. He told of his younger days, playing baseball at the old Church Farm with other pioneers including Pres. Heber J. Grant.

Mr. Guest was among the first to pioneer the Cottonwood Canyons from where he hauled the winters [sic] supply of wood. Each trip by wagon and through the sage country took four days. He explained that bear hunting and fishing were "tops" in those days.

Mrs. William Schneider, Mrs. Albert Schmidt, Mrs. Mike Julian and Mrs. J. Walkenhurst were hostesses of Friday's party. [Friday was 10 Nov 1939.]
