  • Died: 5 Mar 1991, Pinellas, FL at age 92

bullet  General Notes:

Margaret died March 5, 1991 in St. Petersburg, FL, at 92 years of age. Her sister, Susan, several years older than Margaret, was still living in St. Petersburg at the time of Margaret's death. Susan was in good health and even teaching Sunday School, being a devout Pentecostal.
Margaret's other sister, Anna , died in 1985, in Calgary, Canada. She survived WWI in Europe. She had two sons who served in the German army. One son was killed on the Russian Front. The other son was captured by British troops and brought to Calgary, Canada as a Prisoner of War. After the war he remained there and became a prosperous roofer there. When the Winter Olympics were held in Calgary in 1988, he was mentioned as one of the twelve former POWs who were still citizens of Calgary. Anna was reunited with her son in Calgary by the Red Cross. In 1964 she traveled to Cincinnati and was reunited with her sister Margaret. She lived in Florida for a time, but returned to Calgary where she died around 1985.
Margaret emigrated in 1921. Point of origin: Eastern Europe. She petitioned the court to become a citizen CIRCA 1960. She resided in St. Petersburg, FL 1971. She was cremated in Cincinnati, OH. Her ashes are at Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, OH, in the Columbarium Room. First came to Detroit where her sister Susan lived. Moved to Cincinnati where her other sister Julia lived.
Changed her last name to Cushing after her divorce from Joseph Wambach Sr., which was the name of her maternal grandmother who raised Margaret after her mother died when Margaret was about 4 years old.
She worked as a live-in maid for a wealthy Jewish Doctor from the age of 8 for nearly fifteen years, until she emigrated to the US in 1921. She emigrated against the wishes of her family who encouraged her to remain in Europe. They all either died or suffered greatly due to WWII.
She understood several Slavic dialects, and on board ship (the George Washington) coming to America, she worked her way up from steerage as a kind of interpreter.
She used to tell all the horror stories about Ellis Island.

Margaret married Joseph WAMBACH Sr., son of Johann WAMBACH and Theresa LENHART, in Apr 1923. (Joseph WAMBACH Sr. was born on 27 Jun 1900 in Hungary, died in Apr 1968 in Cincinnati, OH and was buried in Apr 1968 in Rest Haven Memorial Park, Evendale, OH.)
