Warburton
Resources
Introduction
The purpose of this page is to provide an index and link to any resources
that might be of use to Warburton researchers. These resources might be: 1.
Created by me in the course of my researches. 2.
Created by others and submitted for inclusion here. 3.
In existence elsewhere and linked to from this site. The only criteria for including a resource is that it might be useful, or
of interest, to another Warburton. If anyone has such material please send me an
email by clicking here.
My own data collection will aim to add value to data that is generally
available on the web, or provide information that is not easily accessed
elsewhere. The following list of resources includes some I have obtained through
my own researches so far, plus some ideas for future resources. The

Incorrect
spellings of Warburton in the UK Censuses Misspellings
is a spreadsheet of over 2500 alternative spellings of Warburton in the UK
censuses as recorded on Ancestry. Often families appear to go missing in a
census only to turn up under a different spelling of the name. Common
alternative spellings of Warburton are Warberton, Walburton, Warbutton,
Warbritton etc. These different spellings can arise because the name was
recorded incorrectly on the original census, or the name was transcribed
incorrectly on the online index. By far the most common version is Warbritton
(over 800 including nearly 300 in 1841 alone), though it would appear this is in
most cases an incorrect transcription on Warbutton on the original census. Some
misspellings may become permanent. For example the UK
National Health Service Register shows 77 modern day Warbuttons and 8
Warbutons, but no Warbrittons, though several of these show up in the US White
pages. However the vast majority of different spellings appear to have been
temporary. If the spreadsheet helps you find a missing entry please let me know here. Bowdon
Families Bowdon
Families is a spreadsheet of all Warburton baptisms, weddings and burials at
St. Mary, Bowdon up to 1837. It was taken in part by me from the parish
registers and bishops transcripts(on microfilm). However I then discovered that
the parish archivist, Derek Murdie was close to completing a similar exercise
for the parish and obtained his Warburton data. It includes baptisms at Ringway
Chapel (from 1727), and St George’s Altrincham (from 1799), each a
chapel-at-ease for Bowdon. Also included are baptisms at Hale Presbyterian
Chapel, though these are also list separately below. I have again attempted to group the entries into
families on a ‘best fit’ basis augmented by other information where
available, such as Monumental Inscriptions and wills. Bowdon had a much larger
Warburton population than Mobberley and the proportion of the families belonging
to my own clan is smaller. Also the Warburton presence is much earlier, and
records are incomplete, in part because of a tradition for nonconformist
baptisms at home, at Ringway Chapel prior to 1723 when it served as an
unofficial nonconformist chapel, or
at Hale Chapel before 1752 when its records began. Families belonging to my own clan, and to the clan of
Bowdon Warburtons from Pool Bank Farm, are colour coded. I have also sought
marriages in other parishes for the parents of children christened at Bowdon.
Because of gaps, and because families are determined on a best fit basis it is
possible that the most obvious assumption does not apply in every case. Also
more work is needed, such as to integrate deaths into the families, and to link
the later families into the earlier censuses. Mobberley
Families Mobberley
Families is a spreadsheet of all Warburton baptisms, weddings and burials at
St. Wilfred, Mobberley. It was taken by me from the parish register (on
microfilm). It includes a grouping of the entries into families. This is done on
a ‘best fit’ basis augmented by other information where available, such as
Monumental Inscriptions and wills. Most of the families in fact belong to my own
clan and these are colour coded. I have also sought marriages in other parishes
for the parents of children christened at Mobberley, and in some case vice
versa. Because families are determined on a best fit basis it is possible that
the most obvious assumption does not apply in every case. Wilmslow
Families Wilmslow
Families is a spreadsheet of all Warburton baptisms, weddings and burials at
St. Bartholomew Wilmslow. It includes a grouping of the entries into families on
a ‘best fit’ basis augmented by other information where available. It is
possible that the most obvious assumption does not apply in every case. Warburtons
in the Great Budworth Parish Register 1558-1734 As part of my research into the Warburtons of Arley
Hall I trawled through a microfilm of the Great Budworth parish registers up to
1734. The Warburtons I found are listed here.
The file includes picture notes showing some of the text that caused my trouble
so you can make your own assessment. Miscellaneous
Parish Register Information This spreadsheet
includes Warburton parish register entries provided to me from various sources.
Alan Jenks provided information from various South Cheshire parishes including
baptisms at Coppenhall St Michael (Crewe) between1817 and 1865, and at Over St
Chad (Winsford) between 1813 and 1911. These are grouped into families with
marriage information added where found. There are also burial plot records from
Coppenhall (1813-1911), and an index to the burial registers at Shocklach
(1813-99), and some miscellaneous marriages. Hale
Chapel Baptisms The Hale
Chapel Baptism Record was the first baptism record I studied and I have
described it in more detail in the My Genealogy page. In all 75 Warburton
baptisms were recorded between 1752 and 1834. Crewe
Estate Records During my research of my own family I studied the
Crewe Estate records at the Cheshire Records Office in Chester, looking
particularly Leases, Rental Books, and Land Surveys of the Crewe’s Hale
estates. I also studied the 1838 tithe maps which are now online. Although
most of the material relates to my own family I have included it here,
including links to two transcriptions of leases form 1616 and 1746. Stamford
Estate Records Notes from a day studying the Stamford estate papers
held at Rylands Library, Manchester are also presented here. Warburton
Landholdings in Hale This is a paper based on the a variety of sources.
Although it focuses on my own family it tries to be comprehensive and may be of
some general interest, particularly in terms of historical background the practice
of 3-lives leases. It can be found here. What’s
in a Name: Warburtons Named Josiah This is a paper based on the frequency of the name
Josiah in my family. It identifies about 46 Josiahs born up to 1900, of whom
about 15 are members of my clan, based on available records. It can be found here. Warburton Wills The Northen Writers Guild are producing a series of
books called Between the Bollin and the Mersey. These include
transcriptions of will from between 1600 and 1760 for the various townships in
that area. Those produced include Bowdon, and the first 2 volumes for Hale. I
have compiled a list of references to the Warburtons in those wills. It is
catalogued here. Also I have started to put together some information
on where Warburton wills can be found here.
Oaths
and Taxes I have collected Warburton references in the Hearth
Tax, Poll Tax, Grand Remonstrance and Oath of Allegiance for Bowdon parish. They
are documented here. Warburton:
The Village and the Family My précis of Warburton: The Village and the Family
by Norman Warburton is here. Marriage
at Manchester Cathedral Marriage
in the Cathedral is a document containing a couple of accounts of multiple
marriages at Manchester Cathedral. Acknowledgements are due to Gay Oliver who
sent me the documents. Future

course are Famous Warburtons, a collections of stories or obituaries of
significant Warburtons of the past, and Useful Links, links to sites
where simple searches produce interesting data on Warburtons. |
