1. Thomas (The Planter)¹ Gardner was born circa 1592 at Dorchester, England. He married (--?--) Margaret circa 1614. He married Damaris (unknown) Shattuck after 1642. He died on 29 Dec 1674 at Salem (Peabody), Essex County, MA. He was buried in 1674 on "Mr. Gardner's Hill" Salem, Harmony Grove Cemetery.
He was overseer of first Cape Ann Plantation, innkeeper. He emigrated in 1624 on the "Zouch Phenix", Cape Ann, commissioned by the Dorchester Company with John Balch. On 17 May 1637 Made a freeman. He lived in 1641 at Essex St., Salem. Will on 29 Mar 1674/75.

  Moved to Hartford, CT. He was Merchant.


• +  4  iii.   Richard Gardner was born circa 1623. He married Sarah Shattock, daughter of Samuel Shattock and Damaris (unknown) Shattuck, in 1652 Salem, MA.


• +  5  iv.   John Gardner was born in 1624. He married Priscilla Grafton, daughter of Joseph Grafton, on 20 Feb 1652/53 Salem, MA or Nantucket.


• +  6  v.   Samuel Gardner was born circa 1627. He married Mary White. He married Elizabeth (Mrs.) Paine.


•     7  vi.   Joseph Gardner was born in 1628. He married Ann Downing in Aug 1656. He died on 19 Dec 1675.


• +  8  vii.   Sarah Gardner was born circa 1630. She married Benjamin Balch, son of John (Emigrant) Balch and (--?--) Margery, circa 1650 Salem.


•     9  viii.   Mirian Gardner was born in 1635. She married John Hill.


• +  10  ix.   Seeth Gardner was born in 1636 at Salem, Essex County, MA. She married Joshua Conant, son of Roger (the Planter) Conant and Sarah Horton, circa 1656. She married John Grafton in 1659.

Damaris (unknown) Shattuck married Samuel Shattock. She died on 28 Nov 1674 at Salem, Essex County, MA. She was (an unknown value).
There were no children of Thomas (The Planter)¹ Gardner and Damaris (unknown) Shattuck.

4. Richard² Gardner (Thomas¹) was born circa 1623. He married Sarah Shattock, daughter of Samuel Shattock and Damaris (unknown) Shattuck, in 1652 Salem, MA. He died on 23 Jan 1687/88 at Nantucket, Dukes County, MA.
Sarah Shattock was born in 1631. She died in 1724. Outspoken, frequently fined.

5. John² Gardner (Thomas¹) was born in 1624. He married Priscilla Grafton, daughter of Joseph Grafton, on 20 Feb 1652/53 Salem, MA or Nantucket. He died in May 1706 at Nantucket.
In 1672 Moved to Nantucket. Will on 2 Oct 1706.

•     27  viii.   Anna Gardner was born in 1667. She married Edward Coffin, son of Peter Coffin and Abigail Starbuck.
  Edward Coffin was born on 20 Feb 1668/69. No children.


•     28  ix.   Nathaniel Gardner was born in 1668.


• +  29  x.   Mary Gardner was born on 27 May 1670 at Nantucket. She married Jethro Coffin, son of Peter Coffin and Abigail Starbuck, in 1686 Nantucket.


•     30  xi.   Mehitable Gardner was born in 1674.


• +  31  xii.   Ruth Gardner was born on 4 Dec 1676. She married James Coffin Jr. She married James Coffin Jr., son of James Coffin and Mary Severance, on 19 Mar 1691/92.

6. Samuel² Gardner (Thomas¹) was born circa 1627. He married Mary White. He married Elizabeth (Mrs.) Paine. He died in 1689.
He was Mariner.

8. Sarah² Gardner (Thomas¹) was born circa 1630. She married Benjamin Balch, son of John (Emigrant) Balch and (--?--) Margery, circa 1650 Salem. She died on 5 Apr 1686 at Beverly, MA.
Benjamin Balch was born in 1628 at Sagamoreship of Naumkeag, Peninsula where RR now crosses harbor from Salem to Beverly, known as Forefather's Rock. He married Abigail Clarke on 5 Feb 1688/89 Marblehead. He married Grace Mallet on 1 Mar 1691/92 Beverly, MA. He died after 1715. Arrested and fined for giving shelter to stranger. First male born in MA Bay Colony, Balch page 9. Inherited "Balch House."

10. Seeth² Gardner (Thomas¹) was born in 1636 at Salem, Essex County, MA. She married Joshua Conant, son of Roger (the Planter) Conant and Sarah Horton, circa 1656. She married John Grafton in 1659. She died on 17 Apr 1707.
Joshua Conant was born circa 1630 at Salem, MA. He died in 1659.

•     39  iv.   Solomon Gardner was born in 1680. He married Anna Coffin.

20. John³ Gardner (John², Thomas¹) was born in 1653. He married Susannah Green.
Children of John³ Gardner and Susannah Green were as follows:

•     40  i.   John⁴ Gardner married Priscilla Coffin, daughter of Jethro Coffin and Mary Gardner. He died in 1759.
  Priscilla Coffin was born on 26 Dec 1691. She died on 23 Nov 1772 at age 80.


•     41  ii.   Jeremiah Gardner married Sarah Coffin, daughter of James Coffin Jr. and Ruth Gardner. He died in 1768.


•     42  iii.   Nathaniel Gardner married Jemima Coffin in 1722.


•     43  iv.   Priscilla Gardner married John Lovell.

29. Mary³ Gardner (John², Thomas¹) was born on 27 May 1670 at Nantucket. She married Jethro Coffin, son of Peter Coffin and Abigail Starbuck, in 1686 Nantucket. She died on 27 Oct 1767 at Nantucket at age 97.
She was Photo in 1720; Portrait from Nantucket Hist. Assoc.
Jethro Coffin was born on 16 Sep 1663 at Nantucket. He died in 1726. He was Master of the ship "George", see photo. He lived in 1686 at Sunset Hill, Jethro Coffin House, "Oldest House, see photo in file.

•     44  i.   Margaret⁴ Coffin was born on 10 Jun 1689. She married Samuel (Rev.) Terry. She married John (Rev.) Wilson.
  Samuel (Rev.) Terry was born at of Barrington, MA.


•     45  ii.   Priscilla Coffin was born on 26 Dec 1691. She married John Gardner, son of John Gardner and Susannah Green. She died on 23 Nov 1772 at age 80.
  John Gardner died in 1759.


•     46  iii.   John Coffin was born on 12 Apr 1694. He married Lydia Gardner, daughter of Richard Gardner Jr. and Mary Austin. He died on 11 Apr 1768 at age 73.


• +  47  iv.   Josiah (Maj.) Coffin was born on 28 Jul 1698. He married Elizabeth Coffin, daughter of James Coffin Jr. and Ruth Gardner.


•     48  v.   Abigail Coffin was born on 12 Feb 1699/0. She married Nathaniel Woodbury. She married Eliakim Swain, son of John Swain and Experience Folger. She died on 7 Jul 1782 at age 82.


•     49  vi.   Robert Coffin was born on 21 Feb 1703/4. He married Parnel Coffin, daughter of Samuel Coffin and Miriam Gardner. He married Susanna Coffin, daughter of Jonathan Coffin and (--?--) Hepsabeth, on 30 Aug 1828. He died on 8 Aug 1757 at age 53.


•     50  vii.   Peter Coffin was born circa 1709.


•     51  viii.   Edward Coffin was born circa 1711.

31. Ruth³ Gardner (John², Thomas¹) was born on 4 Dec 1676. She married James Coffin Jr. She married James Coffin Jr., son of James Coffin and Mary Severance, on 19 Mar 1691/92. She died on 4 Oct 1748 at age 71.
Children of Ruth³ Gardner and James Coffin Jr. are:

•     52  i.   Sarah⁴ Coffin married Jeremiah Gardner, son of John Gardner and Susannah Green.
  Jeremiah Gardner died in 1768.

James Coffin Jr was born circa 1664 at Nantucket. He married Love Gardner, daughter of Richard Gardner and (--?--) Sarah. He died on 2 Aug 1741.

34. Freeborn³ Balch (Sarah² Gardner, Thomas¹) was born on 9 Aug 1660 at "Balch House" Beverly, MA, Balch p 18. He married Mirriam Moulton Bachelder in 1682. He married (--?--) Mallis circa 1689. He married Elizabeth Fairfield, daughter of Walter Fairfield and Sarah Skipperway, on 30 Apr 1690. He died on 12 Jun 1729 at near Wenham, Beverly, MA, at age 68. He was buried at Cemetary near Wenham Lake.
He was Farmer, Fine apple orchard, cider mill.
Mirriam Moulton Bachelder was born in 1657. She died circa 1688.

He lived at North Liberty Street. He lived at 60 Cliff Road, see photo from Nantucket Historical Assoc.
Elizabeth Coffin was born in 1703. She died in 1774.

•     62  i.   Ruth⁵ Coffin was born on 4 Nov 1725 at Nantucket. She married Samuel Calder, son of Robert (Emigrant Dr.) Calder and Hannah Lawrence, on 30 Jan 1751/52 Nantucket. She died on 10 Sep 1797 at Nantucket, MA, at age 71. Twin of Mary.
  Samuel Calder was born at Charlestown, MA. He was baptized on 29 Oct 1727 at Christ Church (Old North Church), Boston, MA. He died in 1785 at Nantucket, MA. A "Scotchman", administrator of mother's estate. Military service member of Capt. Thomas Jenner's Company. He was barber of Nantucket, then attorney for B. Fosdick, Durrell says carried on his father's business.


•     63  ii.   Mary Coffin was born on 4 Nov 1725.

54. Nathan⁴ Coffin (Ruth³ Gardner, John², Thomas¹) was born on 9 Jun 1696. He married Lydia Bunker in 1717. He died on 4 Dec 1768 at age 72.
Lydia Bunker was born in 1699. She died on 4 Dec 1785.
Children of Nathan⁴ Coffin and Lydia Bunker were:

•     64  i.   Simeon⁵ Coffin was born on 24 Jul 1730. He married Jedida (Folger) Coffin, daughter of John Folger and Rebecca Folger. He died on 26 Mar 1816 at age 85.

55. Elizabeth⁴ Coffin (Ruth³ Gardner, John², Thomas¹) was born in 1703. She married Josiah (Maj.) Coffin, son of Jethro Coffin and Mary Gardner. She died in 1774.

Elizabeth Gardner was born in 1705. She died in 1752.
Children of Jonathan⁴ Gardner and Elizabeth Gardner were:

•     67  i.   Jonathan⁵ Gardner was born in 1728. He married Sarah Putnam, daughter of William Putnam and Elizabeth Putnam, in 1752. He died in 1791.

61. William (Rev.)⁴ Balch (Freeborn³, Sarah² Gardner, Thomas¹) was born on 30 Sep 1704 at Beverly, MA, Balch p 34. He married Rebecca Stone, daughter of Daniel Stone and Hannah Woodbury, on 12 Mar 1726/27. He married Abigail Blodgett on 22 Jul 1802. He died on 12 Jan 1791 at Bradford (Groveland) MA at age 86.
Inherited orchards, made "arminian cider." He was educated in 1724 at Harvard, studied theology. He was Minister in East Bradford for 65 years.
Rebecca Stone was born on 23 Mar 1708/9. She died on 2 Jul 1749 at age 40. 7 children.
Children of William (Rev.)⁴ Balch and Rebecca Stone were as follows:

•     69  ii.   Nathaniel Balch was born on 17 Jan 1737/38 at Bradford, MA, page 55. He married Joanna Day, daughter of John Day and Abigail Bailey, circa 1767. He married Sarah Coffin on 22 Jul 1802. He died on 26 Oct 1802 at Newburyport, MA, at age 64. He was buried at old cemetary near the Mall in Newburyport, MA.
  He was Constable of Bradford, a cooper.
  Joanna Day was born circa 1740. She died on 13 Sep 1800. 16 children.
  Sarah Coffin died on 26 Jan 1804. A widow.

Abigail Blodgett was born in 1705. She died on 10 Apr 1793. No issue.
There were no children of William (Rev.)⁴ Balch and Abigail Blodgett.
