"William Garrett was the first Garrett to live at Oak Hill farm. He served in the Confederate Army as did two of his sons. He survived the war, but was killed by his own horse while riding in Fountain Inn, SC. The war took the lives of so many of the South's young men that many of the women were unable to find husbands after the war. Three of William and Jane's daughters never married, Ann, Nan and Frances. "John Ervin Garrett inherited Oak Hill Farm from his father as the eldest surviving son. In 1895, their young son Hamp collapsed on the fields while working and died. John Ervin was so stricken with grief that he could not continue farming at this place. He moved his family to his uncle's, the "Bachelor John Jones", farm nearer to Fountain Inn, SC, and managed the farm for him. After a few years he moved again to Pelzer, SC, where he worked at the Pelzer Manufacturing Company. He retained ownership of Oak Hill Farm but never returned, instead leasing the farm to others. Bachelor Jhn Jones is buried beside John, Mary and Hampton Garrett at Clear Spring Baptisit Church."
