Thomas Wingo

Thomas Wingo was born September 18, 1764, the son of Thomas Wingo, Jr. and Sarah whose maiden name is unknown. Both were residents of Amelia County, Virginia. Thomas Wingo, Jr. died around the age of 25 in 1765 leaving a wife with four small children - William, Thomas, Obediah and Oney. His will was probated 27 Jun 1765 in Amelia County. In 1766, Sarah Wingo was listed on Thomas Tabb's Amelia County tax list as head of household being taxed for the 200 acres that had previously belonged to her husband. About 1767, Sarah married John Foster, the son of neighbor William Foster in the Stock's Creek area of Amelia County and little more is known of her.

A decade later Sarah's sons William and Thomas served in the American Revolution. William's service is well documented in his pension statement. He was captured at Charleston, South Carolina with General Lincoln's army in May, 1780 and released at Jamestown in June, 1781. Thomas is only mentioned as serving in the Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution by John H. Gwathmey, pub. 1979.

Since Thomas Wingo was about 35 years old at the time of his marriage to Mary Holt sometime before 1800, it is possible that there had been an earlier marriage but no record has been found. Mary, born May 23, 1778, was the daughter of Shadrack Holt and Judith Foster formerly of Amelia County whose lands were included in the new county of Nottoway formed in 1788. Shadrack Holt's sister, Mary had married Thomas's brother William in 1783. The marriage record of Thomas Wingo to Mary Holt has not been found because no marriage records survived the vandalism and burning of records of the Nottoway County courthouse by the union troops occupying the area during the civil war. The marriage date is unknown but they were married prior to September of 1800 when they executed a deed to Shadrack and Judith Holt in Nottoway County.

After the death of Shadrack Holt in 1801, Thomas and Mary continued to live in Nottoway County until after 1820 as did Mary's mother Judith Foster Holt. Shortly after 1820, they relocated to Pittsylvania County, Virginia where Mary's brother Miles Holt had been living since before 1800.

Mary Holt died in Pittsylvania County on July 4th, 1827 and Thomas Wingo died the following year on May 4th, 1828. His will dated 27 Jan 1824 was recorded on 27 May 1828 in Pittsylvania County.
