Wingo Family History

The earliest proven ancestor of the Wingo family of the southern United States is John Wingo who died in Amelia County, Virginia in 1755. His origins are the subject of much research and speculation but to date, no records have been found prior to the family's arrival in Amelia County. Several of the theories regarding Wingo origins are:

The records of York County, Virginia include the administration of the estate of a Jerimiah Winge/Wingo who died there in 1688 leaving a wife, Elizabeth, in apparently reduced financial circumstances. That Jerimiah is also listed in the records of the county regarding a court case in January 1688 pertaining to a horse that Jeremiah Wing (?) had sent his servant, John Duning, to collect from Francis Rosser and he is also mentioned in the Inventory of the estate of Isaack Goddin on 30 Oct 1688. No further record of Elizabeth Wingo/Winge or any children has been located.

The marriage on 15 Jul 1688 of a Thomas Wingo/Winger to Ann Taylor Doss, widow of John Doss, was recorded in the records of Christ Church Parish of Middlesex County, Virginia. The births of Ann's children born during her marriage to John Doss are also recorded in the Christ Church Parish register but the register does not contain records that any children were born during her marriage to Thomas Wingo.

In Charles County, Maryland there are also records of the births of children to a Joseph Wingoe and wife Elizabeth during the 1680's but no record that they left Maryland moving south into Virginia.
