Descendants of Heinrich Beck

Generation One

1. Heinrich1 BECK was born circa 1784. He married Johanna Sophia Werling, daughter of Balthasar Werly and Maria Juliana Krierin, on 21 Feb 1804 in Battenberg, Pfalz Co, Bayern[Bavaria] (Evangelisch-Luth Church).

Johanna Sophia WERLING was born circa 1787 in Battenberg, Pfalz Co, Bayern[Bavaria]. She was christened on 28 Jun 1787 in Battenberg, Pfalz Co, Bayern[Bavaria] (Evangelisch-Luth Church).

Children of Heinrich1 Beck and Johanna Sophia Werling were as follows:

Generation Two

6. Jacob2 BECK (Heinrich1) was born on 1 Nov 1815 in Kleinkarlbach, Pfalz Co, Bayern, Germany (Evangelisch-Luth Church). He was christened on 2 Nov 1815 in Battenberg, Pfalz Co, Bayern[Bavaria] (Evangelisch-Luth Church). He married Christina Tisch, daughter of Johann Philipp Tisch and Eva Katherine Trott. He died on 22 Mar 1872 in Plainfield, Union Co, NJ, at age 56. He was buried in Plainfield, Union Co, NJ (United Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lot 187 1/2).

Sophie's family says she came as "as a little girl", and Rosina's family says she was only two years old. However, it appears that they came to this country a little later than that. It may be that Jacob, aged 37 and a brother, Conrad, Came during 1855. I have seen notice of this but as yet (1994) have not looked up the particulars. If this is the case, it seems that Jacob may have been younger than Christine.

He appeared on the census of 26 Jul 1860 in Plainfield Twp, Union Co, New Jersey.

Christina TISCH was christened in Battenberg, Pfalz Co, Bayern[Bavaria]. She was born on 4 Jul 1812 in Battenberg, Pfalz Co, Bayern[Bavaria]. She died on 2 Sep 1896 in Plainfield, Union Co, NJ, at age 84 (info from United Presb. Cemetery records, letter dated 29 Jun 1982). She was buried in Plainfield, Union Co, NJ (United Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lot 187 1/2). From within the series of "Germans to America", it is found that Christine Beck, age 42, Sophie, age 13, and Rosina, age 9, all made passage to the United States on the ship "Mercury" from Havre. It's destination was New York, and the ship arrived on 24 September 1855.

Christina was living with her daughter Sophie's family for the 1880 census in Plainfield, Union Co, New Jersey. She was listed as born Bavaria, then aged 67 years[p. 421B].

Children of Jacob2 Beck and Christina Tisch were as follows:

Generation Three

8. Sophia3 BECK (Jacob2, Heinrich1) was born on 10 Aug 1842 in Kleinkarlbach, Pfalz Co, Bayern, Germany (1880 census Plainfield, Union Co, NJ). She was christened on 14 Aug 1842 in Battenberg, Pfalz Co, Bayern[Bavaria] (Evangelisch-Luth Church). She married Charles Dencklau on 5 May 1867 (info from obituary for Sophie Beck Dencklau). She died on 28 Feb 1924 in N. Plainfield, Somerset Co, NJ, at age 81. She was buried in Plainfield, Union Co, NJ (United Presbyterian Cemetery, Lot 187 1/2).

Sophie's obituary mentioned she was a member of Trinity Reformed Church, and the Ladies Christian Work Society of that church, as well as a charter member of Iona Council, No. 14, Degree of Pocahontas.

After her husband, Charles, died in 1902, Sophie moved in with her daughter, Pauline Beckman and her family.

Charles DENCKLAU was born on 31 Dec 1838 in Hamburg, Germany (Dencklau Bible in poss. of Walter B. Dencklau, 1985). He died on 24 May 1902 at age 63. He was buried in Plainfield, Union Co, NJ (United Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lot 187 1/2). The 1880 census for Plainfield, Union Co, New Jersey indicates that Charles was born in Hamburg.

According to his wife's obituary, Charles Dencklau was am engineer for the clothing manufacturing plant of Shepflin, Baldwin & Tweedy at W. Front & Grove Streets.

Children of Sophia3 Beck and Charles Dencklau were as follows:

9. Rosina3 BECK (Jacob2, Heinrich1) was born on 31 Oct 1844 in Kleinkarlbach, Pfalz Co, Bayern, Germany (death certificate states aged 82-3-10). She was christened on 3 Nov 1844 in Battenberg, Pfalz Co, Bayern[Bavaria] (Evangelisch-Luth Church). She married Paul A. Koch, son of Otto P. Koch, before 1868. She died on 9 Jan 1927 in Somerville, Middlesex Co, MA, at age 82. She was buried on 12 Jan 1927 in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett, Middlesex Co, MA.

She appeared on the census of 20 Apr 1910 in 242 East Eagle Street, Boston, Suffolk Co, Massachusetts (Rosina was listed as having emigrated in 1863, having had six children, and all six still living. Still with her were daughters Sophie, 28 and Catherine 23).1 Rosina petitioned Suffolk County Probate Court on 1 March 1916 concerning the administration of her late husband's estate. His other heirs were listed as: Paul J. Koch, Boston; Joseph C. Koch, Medford; Christina L. Ross, Boston; Sophie P. Waugh, Brookline; John D.A. Koch, Beverly; and Katherine I. Koch, Boston. She appeared on the census of 3 Jan 1920 in Somerville, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts (The census indicates she came to America in 1853 and was naturalized in 1860. It appears that she and parents were born in Mainheim???).2

Paul A. KOCH was born in Oct 1835 in Frankfort, Germany (death certificate, aged 72 yrs, 7 days). He died on 1 Nov 1907 in Boston, Suffolk Co, MA, at age 72 (death certificate, #9651, Boston, Suffolk Co, MA VR). He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett, Middlesex Co, MA. The 1880 census of Boston shows Paul Koch and family living at 283 Lexington Avenue. By 1907 the family was residing at 242 East Eagle Street in East Boston.

On 2 November 1907 the Boston Globe carried a story on page 2 headlined "Kills Himself With Shotgun - Paul Koch said to have been despondent." It tells us that "while the family were preparing for supper shortly after 6 o'clock Mr. Koch went into the cellar of his house. Members of the family heard the report of the gun and rushed to the cellar. Mr. Koch was found lying on the floor with a wound in his right temple." He was removed to the Relief station, but died a few minutes later. The article says that the year before Paul Koch had attempted to end his life by "cutting his wrist with a razor. He had been suffering from despondency. He was retired from business." One can only imagine the grief of his wife and eight children.

According to Rosina Bowdidge, in a letter written to Pam Wood Waugh dated 29 Oct 1981, Paul Koch had a brother back in Frankfort, Germany. He lived in 1890 in 250 E. Eagle Street, Boston, Suffolk Co, MA. He was listed as a sugarmaker.3

The Dencklau Bible was frayed on the side were the year of his birth was recorded. I am assuming it was 1878, as this would "fit", but this must be verified by other sources.
