Johannes Jacob3 BRUST (Hans2, Hans1) was baptized on 12 Jun 1727 in Poppenweiler, Ludwigs District, Wurttemberg, Germany.47,48 He married Anna Katherina Wolff, daughter of Hans Adam Wolff and Anna Maria Gotter, after 8 May 1750 (Supposedly they married on the ship enroute to America). He died after 28 May 1792 in Brunswick, Rensselaer Co, NY (Jacob and wife Anna Catherina were last noted as witnesses in a 1792 baptism in Brunswick, NY. To this point (1995), no death or burial location has been found).

Jacob Brust supposedly immigrated to America after the death of his father. Records show that Jacob was 23 years old, when he left on 13 April 1750 to go to his aunt, Barbara Netter(in), his mother's sister in Pennsylvania, because she "without heirs" [Prindle, " Some Emigrants to America...", NGBR, Vol XCIII, # 2, Apr 1962].

It is said he married on the ship en route, although at this time (1990) this compiler has no evidence of this fact. Again, as the story goes, after arriving in New York harbor they boarded a sloop for Troy, NY where they spent the winter. The next spring they applied for a land grant from Stephen Van Rensselaer. The yearly rent was a day's work on the roads, "four fat fowle, four saleable bushels of wheat". They were to pay the rent on February 1st of each year in Watervleet. I have been told that upon Jacob's death, the farm was divided among the sons, the house and barn going to his youngest son, George. As of after 1750, he was also known as Jacob Brust.

Anna Katherina WOLFF was born circa 1723. She died after 28 May 1792 in Brunswick, Rensselaer Co, NY. Paul Prindle's article " Some Emigrants to America from the Ludwigsburg District, Wuerttemberg, Germany 1738-1750", NBGR, Vol XCIII, #2, April 1962, says "Anna Catherina, d/o the late Hans Adam Wolff, resident citizen and linenweaver, going to Pennsylvania on 8 May 1750."

22. Barbara4 BRUST (Johannes3, Hans2, Hans1) was born in 1751. She married Anthony Derick, son of Coonradt Derick and Elisabetha Catherina Müller, on 28 Oct 1771 in Albany, NY (Albany Reformed Church).49 She died in Mar 1787 (records of Barbara Morgan Baxter, March 1995).

Anthony DERICK was born on 25 Jun 1742 in Siegen, Westerwald, Germany (date from gravestone).50 He died on 4 Feb 1817 in Brunswick, Rensselaer Co, NY, at age 74 (gravestone, aged 74y-7m-10d). He was buried in Wheeler-Derrick Cemetery, Centre Brunswick, Rensselaer Co, NY. Anthony Turk, born Germany, then aged 17 and a labourer, was listed on a muster roll of Capt. Peter Harris's Compant taken at Dutchess County on 1 May 1760.51

Mary Brust wrote her will before J.E. Faribault, notary on 22 March 1827. She listed her daughters as "Annah Derick, wife of William Strothers, Elizabeth Derick, wife of Randle Bissell & Mary Derick, wife of John Dunbury" her clothes, linens and other moveable property. She left her son "Conrad Derick, Esquire, of the seigniory of Noyan" all immoveable property.

Philip DERICK was born in 1753 in Siegen, Westerwald, Germany.57 He died on 3 Aug 1825 in Noyan, Missisquoi Co, QC.58 He was buried on 4 Aug 1825 in 3rd Concession Cemetery, Noyan, Missisquoi Co, QC.

For several years after that the family resided at Fort Covington, New York were Merritt was a member of the Presbyterian Church. They later moved to Stanstead, Quebec for about eight years and the 1891 census of Stanstead indicates the Salls family was now Congregationalist. They finally settled in Clinton, Massachusetts about 1900.

There, Merritt had a door-to-door butter and egg business before building a combination home and grocery store on High Street in Clinton. In 1904, Merritt's ill health forced him to sell his business to his sons, Herbert and Claude.

Rutherford D. SCOTT was born on 11 Apr 1824 in Noyan, Missisquoi Co, QC. He died on 5 Apr 1884 in Menasha, Winnebago Co, WI, at age 59 (death record, Winnebago Courthouse, Vol 2, pg 53). He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Neenah, Winnebago Co, WI. Rutherford Scott supposedly arrived in Wisconsin in 1859, purchasing 150 acres in Section 13, Menasha Township. However, three of his children born after that date were baptised in Clarenceville; two in 1864 and one in 1868. This may only show that the family made visits back to Clarenceville. "History of Winnebago County, WI" by Lawson says he "was a good man, known for his uprightness and probity of character and all who knew him honored and respected him". He and his wife are said to have had seven children, with only three still living in 1908.

Rutherford was known to be a Republican in politics and a "generous supporter of the Methodist Episcopal church. His obituary (Menasha Press, 10 April 1884) states that he "had been a great sufferer" being blind near the end, and had died of neuralgia and typhoid fever.

The family homestead was purchased by his son Marshall J. Scott after Rutherford's death, and his widow, Adeline Adelia, stayed on living with her son until her own death in 1917.
