Descendants of John Darrah

Generation One

1. John1 DARRAH was born circa 1834 in NB. He married Rebecca Jones on 4 Dec 1860 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB. He died on 11 Mar 1899 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB.1 He was buried on 13 Mar 1899 in Church of England Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, NB.

At the time of their marriage in 1860, John and Rebecca were both of Portland. John signed his last name Darough and Rebecca could not write.

City Directory of 1863-64 lists a George J. Darragh, laborer, with a house on Main, near Charles. Our John "Darragh", caulker, was living on Main near Hazen. Hutchinson's Directory of 1867-1868 lists a John Darrow, "caulker" residing Simonds Street, in Portland. The 1865-66 does not list a John Darrow, but does list in Portland the only two Darraghs: Goram, a boat builder, living on Straight Shore near Simond in Portland, and Robert, a teacher, on Chapel near Acadia in Portland. The 1869/70 city directory of Portland shows John Darrah with a house on Millidgeville. As of 1860, he was also known as John Darough. As of 1860, he was also known as John Darragh.2 As of 1881, he was also known as John Darry. He appeared on the census of 1881 in Wellington Ward, Saint John, Saint John Co, Canada (The 1881 census shows that everyone in the family belonged to the Church of England, except Rebecca, who was Presbyterian. John Darrah is again shown as born New Brunswick, while Rebecca was born in Ireland).3 He was (an unknown value) in 1881 in a ship carpenter.4 As of 11 Mar 1899, he was also known as John Derrah.5

Rebecca JONES was born circa 1826 in Ireland (b'date from 1901 census, Victoria Ward, Saint John). She died circa 1915 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB. Rebecca Darrah was was listed as the head of the household in 1891, Wellington Ward, District 2, p.9. She was enumerated as a Presbyterian, aged 61, and widowed, born in Ireland, and both parents born Ireland. Her daughter "Ellen J.", aged 30 and her husband, John Nesbitt, aged 32, were living there with their daughter "Ellen M." aged 3, but were listed as Baptists, obviously following John's faith.

The 1901 census of Victoria Ward shows that Rebecca was a widow, then living at 98 Winter Street. She was noted as having come from Ireland in 1848 and was a Presbyterian. She lived in 1914 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (The Saint John City Directory of 1914 shows Rebecca Darrah, widow of John, living at 98 Winter Street, living with her son William. The 1915 and 1916 directories show only her son William. It is assumed she died c1915, although no burial permit has surfaced).

Generation Two

2. Eleanor J.2 DARRAH (John1) was born on 26 Aug 1861 in NB. She married John Nisbet, son of Oliver Nisbet and Mary Stewart, on 11 Oct 1886 in FCB Church on Waterloo Street, Saint John, Saint John Co, NB. She married William Alexander Ward on 24 Sep 1896 in Saint John Co, NB (Saint John Co VR, Book 4/1896, Reg #2913 (PANB film #F15581)). She died on 7 Mar 1930 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB, at age 68. She was buried on 9 Mar 1930 in Church of England Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, NB.

Eleanor Darrah was located with her husband, Alexander Ward, for the 1901 census in Victoria Ward [2], at 102 Winter Street. She was listed as of Irish origin. The census also listed Alexander's children as well as her daughter, Ella May Nesbitt, then aged 10. Eleanor's mother was not far away at that time, residing at 98 Winter Street.

Eleanor's obituary appeared in Saint John's Evening Times Globe on Saturday, 8 March 1930. "Following a lingering illness,...died on Friday at her residence, 10 Millidgeville Avenue, at the age of 57 years. She leaves to mourn one daughter, Mrs. Stanley Wood of Boston, and three step-daughters, Mrs. George Maynes of this city; Miss Charlotte Ward of Beverly, Mass, and Mrs. J. Cheaney of Montreal. One sister, Mrs. James Daye of Main Street, North End, also survive[sic].).

John NISBET was born circa 1859 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (died aged 32 yrs). He died on 13 May 1891 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (Saint John Co Burial Permits, Vol 3, #909 (PANB film #F20740)). He was buried on 16 May 1891 in Fernhill Cemetery (interred in public ground), Saint John, Saint John Co, NB. John's burial permit states that he was John Nisbett, born in Saint John and his father was named Oliver.

The 1869/70 Portland Directory lists an Andrew Nesbitt with a house on City Road. The 1869/70 Saint John City directory has a John Nesbit, tailor's cutter with a house on Orange; a Mary Nisbet, widow of William at 102 Carmethen, and a John Nisbet, tailor at 21 Orange. John was employed as a millman at the time of his death at age 32 years. He was interred in public ground at Fernhill Cemetery. He was Millman in 1891.

William Alexander WARD was born on 5 Dec 1863 in England (1901 census, Victoria Ward, Saint John, NB). He married Jessie Campbell, daughter of Ephraim Campbell and (--?--) (--?--), before 1884. He died on 25 Apr 1933 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB, at age 69 (Saint John Co VR, Vol 80, reg #80507 (PANB film #F18983)).

There were no children of Eleanor J.2 Darrah and William Alexander Ward.

4. Joseph Albert2 DARRAH (John1) was born on 6 Aug 1864 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB.7 He married Margaret Theresa Dolan on 13 Nov 1893 in NB. He died on 11 Jul 1926 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB, at age 61.8 He was buried in Fernhill Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, NB.

Margaret Theresa DOLAN was born on 17 Feb 1874.9 She died on 28 Mar 1942 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB, at age 68.10 She was buried in St Joseph's Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, NB.

Generation Three

6. Ella May3 NISBET (Eleanor2Darrah, John1) was born on 22 Sep 1888 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (Saint John Co VR, Vol 2, p. 26, reg #866 (PANB film #F14954)). She married Stanley Fenwick Wood, son of William Judson Wood and Eveline Daley, on 16 Apr 1912 in Orient Heights, MA. She died on 27 Jan 1970 in Hudson, Middlesex Co, MA, at age 81. She was buried in Forestvale Cemetery, Hudson, Middlesex Co, MA.

A third birth record, from the 1901 census record of Saint John Co, Victoria 2 Ward, shows her birthday to be 6 September 1890.

Her birth record lists her as Ella May Nisbet, and her parents as John Nisbet and Ella J. Darrah. She was naturalized on 12 Dec 1938 in Boston, Suffolk Co, MA (Petition #190444, Certificate # 4560391 states Ella May Wood was aged 51 yrs, of fair complexion, with hazel eyes, black hair, 120 pounds and 5' 1 1/2 " tall, then a resident of 20 Causeway Street, Hudson, Massachusetts).

Stanley Fenwick WOOD was born on 22 Apr 1887 in Hampton Village, Kings Co, NB (His father, William Judson Wood, filed for late registration of his birth on 15 Jul 1940 at E. Saint John before Notary Public F.E. Jossely. William J. Wood stated he was a resident of Hampton and a carpenter at the time of Stanley's birth, the assisting physician being Dr. Smith).15 He died on 13 Sep 1949 in Hudson, Middlesex Co, MA, at age 62 ("Stanley F. Wood, 62, died very suddenly Tuesday morning at his home, 92 Manning Street. He had been convalescing rapidly from a severe attack suffered a month ago. Mr. Wood was born in St John's (sic), new Brunswick, son of the late William J. and Evelyn (Daley) Wood. He and his family had resided here for the past 26 years. He was employed as a machinist by the Lapointe Machine Tool Company. He was respected in the community, and held in high regard by many friends. He was a member and deacon of the First Federated Church. He leaves a wife; Mrs Ella M, (Nesbitt) Wood, two sons, Donald J. and Stanley R.,; two daughters, Misses Evelyn R.. and Doris E., all of Hudson; two brothers, Joseph P. and Carey S., and one sister, Mrs. Frank Crozier of St John's (sic), New Brunswick. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock, at the First Federated Church, with Rev. Frederick A. Hayes, pastor, officiating. Burial wil be at Forestvale Cemetery, in charge of William B. Leland, funeral director").16 He was buried on 15 Sep 1949 in Forestvale Cemetery, Hudson, Middlesex Co, MA.17 He was naturalized on 24 May 1937 in Boston, Suffolk Co, MA (Petition #176123, Certificate # 4525340 states Stanley Fenwick Wood was aged 50 yrs, of medium complexion, with blue eyes, grey hair, was 5' 4 " tall, 178 pounds, and then a resident of 20 Causeway Street, Hudson, Massachusetts. The only distinguishing mark was a scar on the back of his right hand).

7. Catherine Aberdeen3 DARRAH (Joseph2, John1) was born on 12 Aug 1894 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB.19 She married Francis Charles Muckler (John Cobham, Family records; [email protected]). She died on 2 Jun 1940 at age 45 (John Cobham, Family records; jocobham@nbnet. nb. ca).
