Genealogy Report for Benjamin Vaughan Genealogy Report for Benjamin Vaughan

Descendants of Benjamin Vaughan

Generation One

1. Benjamin1 VAUGHAN was born circa 1713 in CT. He married Rose (--?--). He died before 12 Nov 1756 in New Fairfield, Fairfield Co, CT.

According to H. Vaughan Griffin's book on "John Vaughan", that was published in 1976, there is no definitive evidence to place Dr. Benjamin Vaughan with the family of John Vaughan, who settled Newport, Rhode Island in 1638. The possible link was from John to George to Christopher, but although Christopher did have a son named Benjamin 2 July 1713, he was not mentioned in his will made 11 Oct 1751, and proved 29 Aug 1752.

Estate papers for Benjamin Vaughan give an inventory of his estate and mention sons Joseph and Benjamin. Rose, his widow was named executrix of his estate on 1 November 1756. The earliest mention in cort records of his estate is 30 Dec 1756. Rose is again mentioned on 2 Apr 1757.[Fairfield County Probate Records, LDS Film #0004024].

Rose (--?--) died circa 1785 in New Fairfield, Fairfield Co, CT. At this point, Rose's family is a mystery. No maiden name has yet (1990) been located. Her Will, written 22 January 1776, mentions Benjamin as her youngest son, as well as her four daughters and their husbands including "Elliner ye wife of Daniel Tryon". Rose Vaughan left all her most of her estate to Benjamin but gave all her "wearing apparil in equal division" to hers daughters. This Will was not proved until 16 August 1785.

The Fairfield Co Probate records show that she was appointed administrator of her late husband's estate on 12 Nov 1756.

Children of Benjamin1 Vaughan and Rose (--?--) were as follows:

Generation Two

5. Sarah2 VAUGHAN (Benjamin1) was born circa 1728 in CT.1 She married Zacheus Towner in 1755 in New Fairfield, Fairfield Co, CT.2 She died on 6 Sep 1806 in Charlotte, Chittenden Co, VT.3

Zacheus TOWNER was born on 3 Apr 1729 in Wallingford, New Haven Co, CT.4 He died on 14 Feb 1814 in Charlotte, Chittenden Co, VT, at age 84.5 Zacheus Towner was a resident of Connecticut in 1790, and was of Charlotte, VT in 1800.

Children of Sarah2 Vaughan and Zacheus Towner all born in New Fairfield, Fairfield Co, CT, were as follows:

6. Josephus2 VAUGHAN (Benjamin1) was born on 5 Sep 1733 in CT. He married Rebecca Towner on 5 Jun 1754 in New Fairfield, Fairfield Co, CT. He died in 1795 in Missisquoi Co, QC.

Josephus Vaughan was definitely a Loyalist during the American Revolution. His estate or property was confiscated by the state of Connecticut in December of 1778, along with his brother Benjamin's.

Joseph supposedly endured many hardships and was said to have rescued sailors during a shipwreck, and after suffering exposure to cold, had a stroke and lost use of his limbs, along with having his speech greatly affected. Before he died, he lived with his sons, Josephus and Harmon, near Noyan.

Rebecca TOWNER died on 12 Aug 1823 in St John's, Iberville Co, QC.

Children of Josephus2 Vaughan and Rebecca Towner were as follows:

7. Ellenor2 VAUGHAN (Benjamin1) was born in CT. She married Daniel Tryon before 1762. She died after 1791 in VT or QC.

Daniel TRYON was born circa 1739 in CT. He died after 1795 in Noyan, Missisquoi Co, QC. There is little evidence to the life of Daniel Tryon other than several land documents. The first is a land patent dated 20 May 1762 in the town of Queensbury, NY. Daniel Tryon was on the list of 23 men headed by Daniel Prindle. No proof exists that this Daniel Tryon is the one who married Ellenor Vaughan, but the evidence should not be overlooked. Land records definitely associated with our subject can be located at the Bennington County Courthouse. The first record dated 19 Aug 1766 involved James Babcock of Shaftsbury selling 100 acres, called Lot #56 "of ye first Division in ye town of Shaftsbury" to Daniel Tryon of New Fairfield. This was not recorded in Shaftsbury until 22 Jun 1786.

The second document was a land sale from Daniel Tryon of Shaftsbury to David and Jacob Galusha dated 14 April 1791, recorded there 24 November 1800.

More important is the third document which is dated 13 February 1795 and lists Daniel Tryon of Shaftsbury initially, but the writer went back and crossed out Shaftsbury and wrote in "Caldwell Manor in the Province of Canada". This particular land sale involved the majority of Lot #56 going to David Galusha. From these documents the assumption can be drawn that Daniel Tryon, with or without his wife Ellenor, must have moved to Quebec to be with his son David between the 1791 census and 1795. The first census of Vermont does show Daniel "Trial" and a woman of about the same age residing at Shaftsbury at this time. Perhaps his wife died between these same years of 1791 and 1795 and he decided to leave to be with his son. No record of Daniel or his wife has been uncovered in Caldwell's Manor. David Tryon is their only known child at this time.

It is the opinion (1990) of this writer that this Daniel Tryon was the David Tryon b. 21 Oct 1739 Wethersfield, Connecticut, son of Benjamin Tryon and Rebecca Hurlbut in the "Hurlbut Genealogy", p. 413. However, the Barbour Collection of Connecticut Vital Records lists this same birthdate for a David Tryon, son of the above mentioned. Further investigation is needed in the original records of this area to provide a solid background for our Daniel Tryon. While the line back from Benjamin and Rebecca Hurlbut Tryon is readily available, further proof of this connection is necessary before I will place it here.

Children of Ellenor2 Vaughan and Daniel Tryon were:

Generation Three

23. Harmon3 VAUGHAN (Josephus2, Benjamin1) was born on 16 Jun 1766 in New Fairfield, Fairfield Co, CT.

Children of Harmon3 Vaughan and ? (--?--) were as follows:

24. Josephus3 VAUGHAN (Josephus2, Benjamin1) was born on 16 Jun 1766 in New Fairfield, Fairfield Co, CT. He married Elizabeth Hawley, daughter of Rueben Hawley and Rachel Hurd, on 12 Mar 1797. He died on 13 Feb 1846 in Noyan, Missisquoi Co, QC, at age 79 (St George's Anglican Church). He was buried on 15 Feb 1846.

Josephus Vaughan was a Loyalist, and removed to Noyan about 1804, establishing the very first ferry to cross the Richelieu River at Lacolle. He also ran a tavern. "In 1925, the landmark where Vaughan's Ferry crossed was named `Remember Point' in memory of Remember Baker, who was one of the Green Mountain Boys, under Ethan Allen". Remember was beheaded by the Indians there.

Elizabeth HAWLEY was born on 10 Jun 1776 in Pawlet, Rutland Co, VT. She died on 17 Jul 1851 in Noyan, Missisquoi Co, QC, at age 75 (St George's Anglican Church). She was buried on 19 Jul 1851.

Children of Josephus3 Vaughan and Elizabeth Hawley were as follows:

25. David3 TRYON (Ellenor2Vaughan, Benjamin1) was born in 1762 in Fishkill, Dutchess Co, NY (taken from Rev. War pension record application). He married Elizabeth Lewis, daughter of Timothy Lewis and Sarah Austin, on 9 Jun 1783 in Congregational Church, Ashfield, Franklin Co, MA (David Tryon and Elisabeth Lewis, both of "Shafsbury New-State,... June 9, 1783 Intention not recorded). He married Anna Bullis, daughter of Joseph Bullis and Lydia Johnson, between 1815 and 1827 (It is likely that Anna Bullis married David Tryon sometime between 1815 and 1827. On 11 Nov 1827, William Tryon, then of Hinchenbrooke, Quebec, sold land in Sabrevois to Joshua Bullis, Anna's son). He died on 11 Feb 1836 in Alburgh, Grand Isle Co, VT (date taken from subsequent pension records).

According to David Tryon's sworn statement on 20 Feb 1835, he was "born in a place then called Fishkill in the state of New York...in the year A.D. 1762". In March 1780, David was residing at Shaftsbury, Vermont where he enlisted for nine months service in the military under Captain William Hutchins in Colonel Ebenezer Allen's Regiment. They "marched to Pittsford where they built a picket fort and scouted from place to place to protect the inhabitants from Indians, Tories and and British...". He served nine months and was discharged.

According to his own story, he removed to New Fairfield, Connecticut for a short time after his service. His name appears on the 1782 list of Freeman at Shaftsbury. By 1783/4 David Tryon was of Clarenceville, Quebec, but it is possible his wife Elizabeth remained for a time in Vermont or Ashfield, MA while he prepared for their lives in Quebec. Many documents concerning the Tryons are located within the files of Leon Lalanne, a notary for the area.

It appears he was ill in 1835 as several documents show he was taking care of land he held. In 1835 there were two transactions to Henry Salls concerning the land granted him in Hereford. On 2 Jan 1836, only a month before his death, he appointed Henry Salls attorney for the land there. On 8 Jan 1836, he appointed Albert Chapman as attorney for the land he had previously purchased from Samuel Wells in Farnham (original sale from Wells was passed before Samuel Gale, notary of Farnham - no date mentioned).

David Tryon's pension application on 20 Feb 1835 says he is a resident of Alburgh, Vermont, however, I find it very unlikely that he ever lived there. I would assume he made a statement to that effect so that he might be able to draw a pension, which he did. I don't believe he ever left Quebec, however, as of this writing (1990) no gravestone has ever been located nor any record of his death, other than the date given by his widow on later pension papers.

Phineas Smith of Alburgh testified 20 Feb 1835 that he personally knew of David Tryon's service during the Revolutionary War in the year 1780. Richard Latin of Franklin, Vermont also testified on that same day that he was personally acquainted with David Tryon. A statement dated 17 May 1836, taken at Alburgh, Vermont, signed by William Ford, states that David Tryon died 11 Feb 1836, and he "helped lay him out, sat up with his corpse, and helped bury him". No gravestone has ever been located for David Tryon.

Elizabeth LEWIS was born on 27 Feb 1762 in Windham, Windham Co, CT. She died circa 1815 in Noyan, Missisquoi Co, QC. Ashfield Congregational Church shows she was in full communion on 30 July 1780. Elizabeth "Tryall" was listed in her father's Will dated 1 May 1813, at Sunderland, Vermont.

Children of David3 Tryon and Elizabeth Lewis were as follows:

Anna BULLIS was born circa 1788 in US. She died on 25 Oct 1863 in Clarenceville Anglican Church, Noyan, Missisquoi Co, QC. She was buried on 26 Oct 1863.

There were no children of David3 Tryon and Anna Bullis.

She died on 1 Oct 1858 in Noyan, Missisquoi Co, QC, at age 46 (Noyan Anglican Church). She was buried on 4 Oct 1858.

Children of Elizabeth4 Vaughan and Henry Naylor were as follows:

38. David4 TRYON Jr (David3, Ellenor2Vaughan, Benjamin1) was born circa 1784 in Shaftsbury, Bennington Co, VT, US. He married Polly Hillman on 6 Jul 1806 in Alburgh, Grand Isle Co, VT. He married Jane Crawford, daughter of Henry Crawford and (--?--) (--?--), circa 1810. He married Rhoda Skeels, daughter of David Skeels and Lydia Powers, on 4 Nov 1835. He died on 5 May 1876 in Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, QC.28 He was buried on 7 May 1876 in St George's Anglican Cemetery, Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, QC.29

David Tryon Jr was born about 1783 probably in Shaftsbury, Vermont. Although his parents married in 1783 at Ashfield, Massachusetts, they were both of Shaftsbury. His mother, Elizabeth Lewis, may have stayed with her in-laws while his father went on to Canada to stake out their home, or it is possible that David Tryon did not arrive in the Manors as early as stated in several sources.

It appears that David Tryon Jr was a strong follower of Methodism. It has been a great disappointment to not yet locate the baptismal records of his children except for that of Mary in 1814 in the Dunham Wesleyan Methodist Circuit Steward's book (1806-1882). Even in this record the birth date is incomplete, giving only the year. In a document located within the files of notry Leon Lalanne dated 19 July 1822, David Tryon "the younger" of Caldwell Manor voluntarily donated land in Lot #18 in the 6th Range to the British Wesleyan Methodist Society "with a view to the facilitation of the preaching and the teaching of the Gospel in Caldwells Manor.." for "permanent establishment of the doctrines...in the Reverend John Wesley's Notes upon the New Testament and his four volumes of sermons.." Later, in the 1830's his children's marriages are recorded by the minister of the St Armand Methodist Church. Clarenceville's Methodist Church finally began in 1845, and his branch of the family began attending there.

Polly HILLMAN died before 1810.

There were no children of David4 Tryon Jr and Polly Hillman.

Jane CRAWFORD was born circa 1789. She died on 16 Feb 1833. She was buried in St George's Anglican Cemetery, Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, QC.30

Children of David4 Tryon Jr and Jane Crawford were as follows:

Rhoda SKEELS was born in 1795 in Highgate, Franklin Co, VT. She died on 11 Oct 1857. She was buried in Highgate Falls, Franklin Co, VT.

There were no children of David4 Tryon Jr and Rhoda Skeels.

39. William4 TRYON (David3, Ellenor2Vaughan, Benjamin1) was born on 16 Jan 1785 in Ashfield, Franklin Co, MA (Since William's birth was recorded at Ashfield, MA, it is possible that Elizabeth remained behind with her family there while David made a home for them in Caldwell's Manor. The other possibility is that they registered the birth during a visit back to see her family considering there was little way of doing such at the Manor. Many of the early settlers were used to registering births and marriages in the local towns in the states, and even in the early 1800's, many still crossed back over the border to have their marriages registered at Alburgh, VT and other border towns). He married Sarah Scott, daughter of Thomas Scott and Anna Willoughby, circa 1805. He died on 31 Dec 1864 in Moira, Franklin Co, NY, at age 79. He was buried in Moira Cemetery, Moira, Franklin Co, NY.

Very little is known about the family of William Tryon and his wife Sarah Scott during the early 1800's. Since baptismal records have yet to be located, the order of birth of their children is not even known. The family were Methodists while living in Moira, NY and perhaps future investigation will uncover much needed church records. Shortly before 1830, William Tryon's two brothers, Abel and Benjamin, were known to be residing in Fort Covington, Franklin County, NY. The record of William's daughter Nancy being born there about 1829 implies that he was there as well and may have even preceeded them. One document dated 2 January 1821 found within the files of notary Leon Lalanne shows us that he sold all his belongings to his brother Abel Tryon. The list gives us a look at his way of life at that time: two horses, four cows, "one yoke of oxen", a yearling, 30 sheep, four "hoggs", 20 tons of hay, 50 bushels of corn, 50 bushel of wheat, two kettles, one pair hand irons, two beds and bedding, two barrels of pork, four barrels of flour, one cupboard, two chests and contents, one plough, and a double sleigh. All these moveable items were sold to Abel Tryon for 92 pounds 5 shillings. On the same date he also sold Lot #7 in the 4th Range and Lot 9 in the 5th Range to Abel. On 27 July 1824 there was a deed of sale executed before Leon Lalanne whereby William Tryon sold two tracts of land in Noyan known as Lots #8 (in part) and #9 in the 5th Range to his brother-in-law Thomas Scott, Jr. These tracts of land had been originally acquired in 1820. Deeds on file in Sherbrooke, Quebec indicate William Tryon was of Hinchenbrooke in Quebec by March 1833, but his eldest son, Philander, was of Moira by 1830, and both he and his father were listed in Moira in 1840. He had finally put down roots.

Sarah SCOTT was born circa 1789 in QC. She died after 1870 in Moira/Brushton, Franklin Co, NY.

Mary Ann LONGEWAY was born on 6 Apr 1791 in L'Acadie, now St Jean Co, QC.39 She died on 1 May 1869 in Stanstead, Stanstead Co, QC, at age 78 (According to the Stanstead Journal dated 6 May 1869, Mary Ann (Longeway) Tryon along with her daughter Elizabeth both died in a house fire. Between ten and eleven o'clock on Saturday night [1 May 1869] "the house and shed of Mr. Walter Covey, of this township, situated not far from Ruiter's Corner, and known as the Bacheldor place, took fire...". It seems that both women had been staying with the Coveys for several weeks. "It is supposed that the fire had made so much progress before it was discovered that the women were probably smothered in their sleep before an alarm was given. The remains of the unfortunate women were buried to-day (Tuesday)"). She was buried on 4 May 1869 in Ruiter's Cemetery, Stanstead, Stanstead Co, QC. The 1880 census of Potawatomie County, Kansas, lists John Tryon, along with his wife Miranda, and four children at Onaga.

The obituary of John Tryon tells that he was an early and respected settler to Kansas, arriving in May, 1869. It also chronicles his two marriages, his first wife "dying March 12,1861, leaving five children - four boys and one girl. His second wife, by whom he had four children, now lives in Sacramento, Cal., where the family moved about fourteen years ago. Mr. Tryon's health failing him there, he returned to Kansas about four years ago, and being so benifitted in health he remained here. Eight children survive him. He was an old member of the Masonic fraternity, and was well respected by all who knew him."

It tells that his illness was one of only several week's duration, and that his children by his first wife were all with him during his last hours and in attendance at the funeral. He died at the house of his son, C.J. Tryon, who lived 5 miles northwest of the city. The obituary also referred to John as "Uncle" John Tryon, which this writer would take as a term of endearment used by others in that community.

Isaac's wife Betsy Crawford did not die until 11 April 1821, almost 3 weeks after his birth. It is likely a result of Benjamin's birth that Betsy died. I imagine that since he married Rachel the next October, that she was the only mother Benjamin ever knew.

Sister Sweet sustained an injury from a fall some time since which, with her age, resulted in her death. Loving hands ministered to her needs during these days of suffering, and laid her to rest in New York State, where she rests until Jesus shall to life the sleepers to him for the grand reunion,

May the comfort of the Gospel hope sustain the sorrowing loved ones and bring each to share in the abundant life. Services were conducted at the home her son, H.A. Sweet, by the writer, Charles W. Shattuck.

As of this writing (1990) no baptism has been located to substantiate that Timothy is the son of Timothy Tryon and Mary Longeway. However, he and his wife were of Clarenceville, Quebec in 1851 and were later living at Westport, NY. The 1880 census of Westport indicated that Timothy's parents were born in Canada and France. I should think this would at least point the way to a Longeway connection.

The 1860 census of Elizabethtown, Essex County, NY shows Timothy, aged 35, Julia, 29; Silas, 11; Augusta, 9, "Syllia", 5, and Alice, 3. At this time, it is not known if Celia was another daughter of Timothy's or if this was Celia, daughter of Joseph Tryon.

In 1860, Stillman Tryon and his family were living in Altona, Clinton Co, NY. His brother Myron was also living with them, and both were listed as day laborers.

In 1870, there is a Lewis TRYON in Lyons Township, Ionia County, Michigan - only a few pages away from the household of Myron N. TRYON. I don't have any conclusive proof at this point, but I would say that Stillman L. was the Lewis Tryon found in Ionia County along with Myron N. Tryon (1998).

Feb. 21, 1946 - The Stanstead Journal ---

Thursday, Feb. 28, will be the one hundred and second birthday anniversary of Beebes, indeed we may say Stanstead Countys, grand old lady, Mrs. Emma (Tryon) Moir. It will be recalled that on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday anniversary, she was accorded an unusual demonstration of popular good will and esteem, receiving more than three hundred messages of congratulations and good wishes, including those of their Majesties, the King and Queen, The Governor General of Canada, Lieut. Governor of the Province of Quebec, Prime Minister King and Hon. Adelard Godbout, then Premier of Quebec; Senator C.B.Howard and a host of other more or less prominent people. Her multitude of admirers and friends are widely scattered over the continent.

This writer, having business in Beebe, recently called at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Boulais, her son in law and daughter, with whom she has resided for many years, to inquire about her health. He found her looking and feeling well, seemingly not a day older than on her one hundredth birthday anniversary.
