James Sharpe was born in 1751 at Cecil Co, Maryland. He was the son of Thomas Sharpe Jr and Elizabeth Gillespie. James Sharpe married Jane Andrews. James Sharpe died on 22 July 1828 at Iredell Co, North Carolina. He was buried at Snow Creek Methodist Church Cemetery, Iredell Co, North Carolina.
James Sharpe served as a Private in the North Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary years. He served in the Light Horse Service, under the command of his brother, Captain Joseph Sharpe. He was also present at the Battle of Kings Mountain on 7 October 1780.
