Hugh Robert Cloer

     Hugh Robert Cloer was born on 16 June 1845 at Iredell Co, North Carolina.^1,2 He was the son of Roberson Cloer and Margret Lavina Byers. Hugh Robert Cloer married Julia A. Goble on 14 June 1866 at Iredell Co, North Carolina. Hugh Robert Cloer died on 28 March 1935 at Caldwell, Catawba Co, North Carolina, at age 89; Hugh's parents were listed as Robinson McClure and [unk] Byers.² He was buried at Mays Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Maiden, Catawba Co, North Carolina; Interesting that the gravestone uses the McClure for both he and his wife.³
      Hugh Robert Cloer was also known as Hugh Robert McClure. Hugh Robert Cloer was also known as Robert Hugh Cloer. He appeared on the census of 8 August 1870 at Concord Twp, Iredell Co, North Carolina; Bob Clore, 24, Julia A., 21, William, 2 and Elizabeth Davis, 60. No relationship is given for Elizabeth Davis.⁴ He appeared on the census of 16 June 1880 at Bethany Twp, Iredell Co, North Carolina; Robert Clore, 34, Julia, 30, Henry, 11, Mary, 10, Margaret, 8, and Frances, 5.¹ He appeared on the census of 5 June 1900 at Fallstown, Iredell Co, North Carolina; Hugh Cloer, 61, Fanny J., 50, Frances, 26, William J., 9 and Mary L. Sharpe, niece, 8. This census indicates they had been married in 1872, but they were married in 1866. It also states that Hugh was born in June 1838.It lists that Julia was mother to six children, all living. This writer is inclined to believe that Henry and William, both born about 1869 are one and the same.⁵ He appeared on the census of 3 May 1910 at Caldwell, Catawba Co, North Carolina; Hugh R. McClure, 63, wife Julia, 58, daughter Frances, 30, and granddaughter Lula (Sharpe?), 17. Hugh had been married 42 years and they had 7 children, 6 still living. It is possible that the Lula Sharpe listed here is the Mary L. Sharpe, 8, enumerated in the 1900 census as Hugh's niece, but actually Frances' daughter.⁶ He appeared on the census of 1930 at Caldwell, Catawba Co, North Carolina; Hugh R. Cloer, 84, was listed with his son, William and his grandson at Caldwell, Catawba Co, NC. It said he had married at age 21, was a widower, and both parents had been born in North Carolina.⁷
