Jacob Beck

     Jacob Beck was born on 1 November 1815 at Kleinkarlbach, Pfalz Co, Bayern, Germany.¹ He was the son of Christian Heinrich Beck and Johanna Sophia Werling. Jacob Beck was christened on 2 November 1815 at Battenberg, Pfalz Co, Bayern [Bavaria].¹ He married Christina Tisch, daughter of Johann Philipp Tisch and Judica Diehl, on 9 January 1840 at Kleinkarlbach, Pfalz Co, Bayern, Germany.² Jacob Beck died on 22 March 1872 at Plainfield, Union Co, New Jersey, at age 56. He was buried at United Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lot 187 1/2, Plainfield, Union Co, New Jersey.
     Sophie's family says she came as "as a little girl", and Rosina's family says she was only two years old. However, it appears that they came to this country a little later than that. It may be that Jacob, aged 37 and a brother, Conrad, came during 1855. I have seen notice of this but as yet (1994) have not looked up the particulars. If this is the case, it seems that Jacob may have been younger than Christine.³ He appeared on the census of 26 July 1860 at Plainfield Twp, Union Co, New Jersey; Jacob Beck, 42, b. Bavaria, farm laborer, Christina, 44, b. Bavaria, Rosina, 16, and Adam, 6.⁴ He and Christina Tisch appeared on the census of 5 July 1870 at Plainfield, Union Co, New Jersey; Jacob Beck, 58, gardener, real estate valued at $2000, born Hamburg; wife Christina, 60, also b. Hamburg.⁵
