John Shufelt was born on 1 November 1788 at Caldwell's Manor, (now Missisquoi Co), Quebec. He was the son of William Shufelt and Catherine Church. John Shufelt married Jane Salls, daughter of Hix Salls and Mary Briggs, circa 1815. John Shufelt died on 24 August 1858 at Brome, Brome Co, Quebec, at age 69.1 He was buried on 27 August 1858 at Union Cemetery, Iron Hill, Brome Co, Quebec.1
According to Henry B. Shufelt's book "Our Folks: A History of the Shufelt Family", John Shufelt was one of the first settlers of Iron Hill, Quebec, having arrived about 1822. His nearest neighbor was about four or five miles off in Farnham. The 1831 census shows him living in Dunham, but he moved back to Iron Hill. John Shufelt also served in the War of 1812.
