Sarah Crawford
F, b. circa 1785, d. 4 April 1864
| Father | Henry Crawford d. 9 Oct 1801 |
| Relationship | 4th great-grandaunt of Pamela Joyce Wood |
Sarah Crawford was born circa 1785. She was the daughter of Henry Crawford. Sarah Crawford married John Salls, son of Hix Salls and Mary Briggs, circa 1801. Sarah Crawford married John Colton on 1 July 1824 at Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec; St George's Anglican Church. Sarah Crawford died on 4 April 1864 at New York. She was buried at Brookdale Cemetery, Brookdale, St Lawrence Co, New York.
The marriage record of her daughter, Rebecca, to Daniel Salls, lists as a witness, Sarah Salls, "her mother". Beneath this signature was Benjamin Salls. Dr. Carroll Salls assumed, in his book, that Benjamin was her father. There is no notation there that says "her father". The groom's father, Solomon Curtis was listed as a witness, and is duly noted as "his father". If Benjamin Salls had been Rebecca's father, the minister would have noted that. This writer believes the Benjamin Salls to be Benjamin Ernest Salls, brother to the deceased John Salls, and uncle to Rebecca. Perhaps signature comparison is necessary (1998).
On Sarah's 2nd marriage to John Colton in 1824, Jane Tryon, "her sister" was a witness. Sarah's signature was on Rebecca's marriage to Daniel Curtis in 1821. On 16 May 1828, Sarah Crawford, widow of the late John Salls, now wife of John Colton, sold land to Henry Salls consisting of Lot #12 in the fourth concession, originally of Daniel Taylor's, who sold to John Salls with entire contents of said lot. It was sold for 550 Spanish milled dollars. The transaction was passed before J. Faribault. She appeared on the census of 26 July 1860 at Norfolk, St Lawrence Co, New York; Sarah Colton, 75, was listed in the household of Ezra Ware and wife, her daughter, Elizabeth Salls.1
