Sir John Fortescue of Meaux was born in 1380. He was the son of William Fortescue of Wimpstone and Elizabeth Beauchamp.1 Sir John Fortescue of Meaux married Eleanor Norreis, daughter of William Norreis of Norreis, at Parish of North Huish; As a result of his marriage to Eleanor, he acquired Norreis. He had manors in Overcomb, Efford and Alsford in the parish of Holberton.1
He was Governor of Meaux in 1420 and had served in French Wars under Henry V, present at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. He was made Captain of Meaux when it was taken in 1422, and Governor of the province of La Brie. He returned to England before 1431 and appears to have a residence in Shepham, Devon.2
