"Sir Richard le Fort, a contemporary of William the Conquerer, the Duke of Normandy, was a very strong Norman knight and a cupbearer to him when he landed in England in 1066. The legend is that with his shield he saved the Duke from blows in battle. He was thenceforward known as Richard le Fort-Escu or Strong Shield." Richard later returned to Normandy, leaving his son Adam to settle in South Devon.2
