Hollis Patterson

     Hollis Patterson was born on 30 November 1821 at Noyan, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.^1,2 He was the son of Frederick Patterson and Nancy May. Hollis Patterson was baptized on 11 February 1826 at St George's Anglican Church, Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.² He married Mary Smart, daughter of Francis Smart and Polly Coolidge. Hollis Patterson died on 21 March 1894 at Clinton Co, New York, at age 72.³ He was buried at God's Acre Cemetery, Peru, Clinton Co, New York.³
     The Grantee Index for Clinton County, NY shows various land holdings he acquired while there: 1852, from J.B. Calkins (21-114); 1865, from Joseph E. Bruce (50-109); and 1873, from Sidney Griffin & wife (65-18). He appeared on the census of 22 August 1860 at Peru, Clinton Co, New York; Hollis Patterson, 39, Mary, 39, Lydia A., 12, Eliza J., 9, Francis H., 4, and Nelson H., 3. Living with the family were Polly Smart, Mary's mother, 58, and Silas Coolidge, 34, a farm laborer.⁴ He appeared on the census of 23 August 1870 at Peru, Clinton Co, New York; Hollis Patterson, 48, B. Canada; Mary, 48, b. New York; Francis H., 13, and Nelson H., 12, both b. New York. Also in the household was Mary's mother, Polly Smart, 67.⁵
