James S. Curtis

     James S. Curtis was born in November 1828 at Quebec.^1,2 He was the son of Daniel Curtis and Rebecca Salls. James S. Curtis married Laura Emery on 30 April 1851 at Brookdale, St Lawrence Co, New York; info from Marion Nichols, letter dated 14 Mar 1992. James S. Curtis died on 2 February 1916 at Brookdale, St Lawrence Co, New York, at age 87; "James Curtis died February 2 after a short illness, aged 87 years, at the home of his daughter, Mrs Jennie Brothers. The funeral was held from the M.E. Church church Saturday, Rev. W.H. Summers officiating. Intermet at Brasher Falls. His other daughter, Mrs. S.N.Browning, of Louisville, was with him at the last. He also leaves one son, H.P. Curtis, of Winthrop, and two other daughters, Mrs Wellington Jenkins, of Brasher Falls, and Mrs George Smith, of Potsdam."³ He was buried at Brasher, St Lawrence Co, New York.
     He appeared on the census of 20 August 1870 at Stockholm, St Lawrence Co, New York; James S. Curtis, 40, Laura, 36, Hiram F., 17, Susan E., 15, Oliver A., 13, Nora, 11, Mary A., 5 and Bell L., 2.²
