John S. Hill1

M, b. July 1832, d. 19 December 1917
John S. Hill was born in July 1832 at New York.1 He married Diana Tryon, daughter of Philander Tryon and Elmira Bryant, between 1860 and 1867 at Franklin Co, New York; Family lore indicates that Diana Tryon married John S. Hill first and that her sister married him after her death. However, no census backs this up. This needs a great deal more investigation.2 John S. Hill married Emma Tryon, daughter of Philander Tryon and Elmira Bryant, before 17 June 1875 at Franklin Co, New York.3,1 John S. Hill died on 19 December 1917 at Moira, Franklin Co, New York, at age 85; John S. Hill died at his home near this village about nine o'clock Wednesday morning after an illness of a week and pneumonia, the immediate cause of death being heart failure. The funeral will be held at the house Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock....
He is survived by one son, John P., and one daughter, Mrs. George Follett, both of this place; the daughter and her family having lived with Mr. Hill since his long illness of last winter. Two granddaughters, Misses Helen and Ruth McMullen, who have made their home with their grandfather since their mother's death several years ago, and two grandsons also survive him..."4
He Since John's children, John and Una were living with Almira Tryon, and her daughters Elsie and Emma in 1870, they were apparently caring for them after Diana Tryon Hill's death. John S. Hill, then 37, was living with his mother.5 He appeared on the census of 17 June 1875 at Moira, Franklin Co, New York; J S Hill, 43, Emma L., 28, John P., 8, Diana U., 6 and Almira Tryon, 63.3 He appeared on the census of 1880 at Moira, Franklin Co, New York; John S. Hill, 47, son John, 13, Diana, 11, his brother A.O., 39, his niece W. Bessie, 11, and his sister, E.P., 50. He was enumerated as married.6 He appeared on the census of 22 June 1900 at Moira, Franklin Co, New York; John S. Hill, 67, Emma, 53, John P., 33, and Elizabeth, 11. John and Emma had been married for 25 years, with three children only one living. Since family has said that John first married Diana, we can presume that John was their son, and that Elizabeth was his daughter by Emma. Also living with them was a servant and a boarder.2
