Calvin Foote Hale was born on 18 September 1830 at Longmeadow, Hampden Co, Massachusetts.2,1,3 He was the son of Silas Hale and Clarissa Colton.1 Calvin Foote Hale married Mahala Tryon, daughter of Philander Tryon and Elmira Bryant, on 30 January 1855 at Springfield, Hampden Co, Massachusetts; Calvin and Mahala both are listed as residents of Springfield, and he was a blacksmith.1,3 Calvin Foote Hale died between 28 April 1897 and 1900 at Buckton, St Lawrence Co, New York; Calvin was mentioned as in failing health in the Ogdensburg Journal on 28 Apr 1897, and his wife was listed as a widow in 1900.4,5
On 21 July 1863, Calvin enlisted for military service with the 95th Infantry, Company C at Potsdam, St Lawrence Co, New York. He was captured at the Battle of Wilderness and was imprisoned for a time at Andersonville.2 He appeared on the census of 1 August 1870 at Stockholm, St Lawrence Co, New York; Calvin Hale, 35, Mahala, 39, Philander, 13, Lewis H., 10, Edson C., and Clinton, 2. Calvin was b. MA, and the rest of the family was born NY.3 He appeared on the census of 11 June 1880 at West Springfield, Hampden Co, Massachusetts; Calvin F. Hale, 45, blacksmith, b. MA, Mahala, 49, Herman, 19 (disabled by scarlet fever), Clinton, 12, all b. NY, Freddie, 5, b. MA.6
