Charlotte B. Dunbar1

F, b. September 1820, d. 18 November 1904
Charlotte B. Dunbar was born in September 1820 at New York.1,2,3 She married Benjamin Tryon, son of David Tryon and Elizabeth Lewis, before 1876.4 Charlotte B. Dunbar married Jedediah B. Sperry between 1887 and 1890; The census showed they had been married ten years. Jedediah had been living in Fayette Co, Iowa with his first wife in 1880. This writer is not sure what got Charlotte to Iowa before 1890.2,5 Charlotte B. Dunbar died on 18 November 1904 at Potsdam, St Lawrence Co, New York, at age 84; From the obituary that appeared in the Potsdam - St Lawrence Herald, 25 Nov 1904, this writer questions as to whether Charlotte ever married Benjamin Tryon.
"Early last Friday morning at the home of her nephew, Geo H. Dunbar, Mrs. Charlotte B. Sperry passed to her reward at the ripe age of 84 years. Mrs. Sperry's long life except fourteen years, was spent in Stockholm and Potsdam. In her young womanhood she taught school at Bicknellville and the Munson district, and served in the capacity of governess in the Clarkson family for some time. She was buried from her late home with Mr. Dunbar last Sunday afternoon, her pastor, Rev. Miller, officiating. Interment was at Brookdale by the side of family friends."
From this, the writer gathers that Benjamin Tryon was the "friend". Not sure why even in his Will, Benjamin named Charlotte as his wife, but it was not mentioned in the obituary. Perhaps further investigation will uncover whether they were actually married or not. The St Lawrence Republican, however, refers to her as Mrs. Charlotte Tryon.6,7 She was buried on 20 November 1904 at Brookdale Cemetery, Lot 91, Section B, Row 5, Brookdale, St Lawrence Co, New York; The St Lawrence Republican reports the remains of Mrs. Charlotte Tryon were interred in Brookdale Cemetery Sunday.8,6,7

Dunbar was 33 yrs old, a school teacher, in the household of her parents, Benjamin and Eunice Dunbar.9 She and Jedediah B. Sperry appeared on the census of 6 June 1900 at Fayette, Fayette Co, Iowa; "Jeddeiah" B. Sperry, 86, and wife Charlotte B., 79, married ten years.
