Oliver Smith was born on 17 August 1836 at Chateaugay, Franklin Co, New York; "Mr. Smith was born in the stone house on East Main Street, now known as the Alvord House...[1923]."1 He was the son of Eli B. Smith and Laura Hawks.2 Oliver Smith married Adelaide V. Stevenson, daughter of (?) Stevenson and Paulina Tryon, in 1860 at Franklin Co, New York; Adelaide Stevenson was of Brushton, upon their marriage.1 Oliver Smith died on 9 February 1923 at Chateaugay, Franklin Co, New York, at age 86.1 He was buried on 12 February 1923 at Franklin Co, New York.1
He appeared on the census of 30 July 1860 at Chateaugay, Franklin Co, New York; Oliver Smith, 24, wife Adelaide, 18, Porter Davis, farm laborer, 24 and Frederick Smith, 16, also farm laborer.3 "He possessed progressive ideas in agriculture and brought the then unproductive acres up to a high state of cultivation. Mr. Smith likewise was imbued with the theory that high grade cattlewere a valuable asset and in the early '70s he established the Kilbowie herd of registered Ayrshires, shipments from which herd went to many states in the Union, as well as to Central and South America."1 He appeared on the census of 21 June 1870 at Chateaugay, Franklin Co, New York; Oliver Smith, 32, Adelaide, 22, Ella, 9, Eli B., 7, Helena, 3 and Julia Cook, domestic, 21.4
