Æthelbald married Princess Judith of Franks, daughter of Charles II "the Bald" King of West Franks and Ermentrude, in 860; Judith was only about 13 at the time of her marriage to Aethelwulf and it was nothing more than a sign of alliance to Charles II "the Bald". But when Aethelwulf died, his son Aethelbald took over his father's marriage bed and married Judith.
Since this marriage was considered to be “agains God’s prohibition and Christian dignity” they were held in disregard and they had an annulment the same year.
