     John Kerr was born circa 1738. He was the son of Thomas Kerr and Christian Dokray.1 John Kerr married Margaret Forsythe in 1783 at Dumfries, Scotland.2 John Kerr married Janet Moffat. John Kerr died in 1798 at Scotland.
     When James went to America, he went to Norfolk to be with his brother in 1771. John owned and commanded the schooner "Fannay" at Virginia, and returned to Ecclefechan in 1783.

Hoddam Parish records show that a John Kerr, merchant of Ecclefechan, married a Margaret Forsythe in 1783 and had two children, followed by a marriage to Janet Moffat in 1790. They had at least five more children.
