     William De Braose was born between 1197 and 1204 at Brecon, Powys, Wales; The Welsh, who detested him as well as the family name, called him Gwilym Ddu, or Black William.3 He was the son of Reginald De Braose.2 William De Braose married Eva Marshal, daughter of Sir William Marshal 1st Earl of Pembroke, before 1221 at Wales.4 William De Braose died on 2 May 1230 at possibly Crogen, Wales; Lord Llywelyn had him hanged after he been caught in Llywelyn's chamber with the King of England's daughter, Joan, Llywelyn's wife. Joan was put under house arrest for a year.3
