Bertha of Hereford

     Bertha of Hereford was born circa 1130 at England; In 1173, her brothers all having died without issue, she brought the Lordships and castles of Brecknock and Abergavenny, to her husband. Hay Castle had already passed to her from her mother, Sibyl of Neufmarche in 1165, whence it became part of the de Braose holdings.¹ She was the daughter of (?) Miles of Gloucester.² Bertha of Hereford married William De Braose 3rd Lord of Bramber, son of Philip De Braose and Aenor de Totnes, before 1150; When Bertha's four brothers died before 1166, without leaving issue, William gained control of valuable Lordships and castles in Brecknock and Abergavenny. Hay Castle had already passed on to Bertha when her mother, Sibyl, died in 1165.¹
