Joseph Tallman

     Joseph Tallman was born circa 1804 at Quebec.¹ He was the son of Humphrey Tallman and Patience Allen. Joseph Tallman married Hannah/Sarah ? (?) before 1837 at Quebec or New York.^1,2 Joseph Tallman died after 1880 at New York.³
     Joseph Tallman may have been born anytime in between 1804 and 1808. Each census reference seems to differ. Also, in one census his wife is listed as Sarah, but in most she is named Hannah. He may have been married more than once. David Ouimette of Littleton, Colorado said Joseph's wife was Jane Patterson b. 1800-1810, and lived in Peru, Clinton Co, NY in the 1830's.
Census records show the Joseph Tallman family resided in Ausable, Clinton Co, NY in 1850; Chesterfield, Essex Co, NY in 1860; Westport, Essex Co, NY in 1865 and Black Brook, Clinton Co, NY in 1870. By 1880, Joseph was 74 yrs old (born c1806) and he and his wife Sarah were living in Lewis, Essex Co, NY. He appeared on the census of 1 October 1850 at Ausable, Clinton Co, New York; Joseph Tallman, 46, Hannah, 38, both b. Canada, along with David, 14, Mahaley, 13, Edward, 11, James, 9 and Jerome, 6, all born NY.¹ He appeared on the census of 20 July 1860 at Chesterfield, Essex Co, New York; Joseph "Tollman" was aged 56, wife Hannah 48, son David 23, Jerome aged 14 and Abram, aged 9.⁴ He appeared on the census of 8 June 1865 at Westport, Essex Co, New York; Joseph Tolman, 59, Hannah, 53, David, 30, Jerome, 21, and Abraham, 14.⁵ He appeared on the census of 6 August 1870 at Black Brook, Clinton Co, New York; Joseph, aged 64, Sarah aged 56, and son David aged 35 were present during this enumeration.² As of 6 August 1870, Joseph Tallman was also known as Joseph Tollman.⁶ He and Hannah/Sarah ? (?) appeared on the census of 15 June 1880 at Lewis, Essex Co, New York; Joseph Tallman was aged 74, born Canada, father born Massachusetts, mother born New York; His wife Sarah was aged 68, born Canada, parents born in Canada.⁷
