Maria M. Tryon was born on 12 May 1808 at Quebec.1 She was the daughter of William Tryon and Sarah Scott. Maria M. Tryon married David Partlow before 1835. Maria M. Tryon married James Salls in 1839 at Saint Lawrence Co, New York; There was only one Salls in Saint Lawrence County, other than Hix. James L., appeared in the 1840 census in Brasher, as well as having a wife and female 15-19 years old.2 Maria M. Tryon died on 9 November 1898 at Franklin Co, New York, at age 90.3,1 She was buried on 11 November 1898 at Sunnyside Cemetery, Gale Road, Brushton, Franklin Co, New York; "Mrs. Sauls, who has been living with her daughter, Mrs. P.P. Dewey, died last week and was buried on Friday. She was a very old lady, having reached her 92d year."

Her stone reads SALLS, but her burial permit reads "Sauls."4,5
She appeared on the census of 15 August 1850 at Moira, Franklin Co, New York; Mary M. Salls, 42, Horatio N., 15, both b. Canada, David C., 8, b. NY, and Sarah E., 4, b. Canada. They were living next to William and Lucina Tryon and their family as well as her parents, William and Sarah Scott Tryon.6 She appeared on the census of 7 July 1860 at Moira, Franklin Co, New York; Maria "Sauls" was living with Martin Loveland, and her two children Corbin, 19 and Elizabeth, 15.7 As of 7 July 1860, Maria M. Tryon was also known as Maria Sauls. She appeared on the census of 28 June 1870 at Moira, Franklin Co, New York; Maria Tryon "Sauls", aged 62 was keeping house, and her mother Sarah Scott Tryon, then 82, was living with her. Also there were Alpheus Brown, 28, wife Sarah, 28 and son Alonzo, 7.8 The 1906 Will of daughter Permelia P. Dewey makes the relationships even more cloudy, as she names Elizabeth Flint as her half sister. Probate lists Horatio Partlow as a brother to Permelia, but lists David Partlow as a half brother, and Corbin D. Sauls as a half brother. The census records are so convoluted, it is difficult to tell when Maria was a Sauls/Salls or Partlow for her childrens' births.9
