William Holt
M, b. 1608, d. 1 September 1683
| Relationship | 10th great-grandfather of Pamela Joyce Wood |
William Holt was born in 1608 at England. He was christened on 20 December 1608 at Bury, Lancashire, England. He married Sarah (?) after 1635. William Holt died on 1 September 1683 at Wallingford, New Haven Co, Connecticut.1 He was buried at Colonial Cemetery, Wallingford, New Haven Co, Connecticut.
While it is not known exactly when William Holt came to New England, his signature appears on the New Haven colony constitution on the 1st of July 1644. Another record indicates he was fined a shilling in September 1643 and another indicates he may have been in the colony in 1642. The Holt Association of America [The First Three Generations of Holts in America] explores the idea that our William Holt was the one listed as a passenger on the ship "Truelove" which sailed from London to the Bermuda Islands on 10 June 1635. This passenger was listed as only 19 when ours would have been 25, according to his death, but they may still be one and the same. In a 1670 slander suit he stated his age as 58, indicating he was born in 1612. It is reasonable to say he was born between 1610 and 1616.
Durrie's history says William Holt married in England, but if he was the passenger on the Truelove, there was no wife listed. Little is known about Sarah. In 1651 she complained to Court that an Indian went into her home while her son was there and stole a pair of her stockings which had cost 5 shillings. The Indian later confessed and was ordered to pay her the 5 shillings.
In Durrie's "History of the Holt Family", he says the original lot in New Haven was on the north side of Water Street between Union and Olive Streets, and contained about two acres. About one half of the plot was later purchased in 1771 by Benedict Arnold, which was confiscated in 1782 by the state. In 1798, Dr. Noah Webster "of dictionary fame" purchased the land and lived in the huge mansion for about 10 years.
About 1673 William Holt and his family removed to Wallingford, CT where he bought land from John Miles in June of that year. No further mention of him is made until 1683 when "William Houlte died aged 73". His stone is the oldest at the Colonial Cemetery in Wallingford.
