Capt John Grout

M, b. circa 1615, d. 25 July 1697
Relationship9th great-grandfather of Pamela Joyce Wood
Capt John Grout was born circa 1615 at England. He married Mary Cakebread, daughter of Thomas Cakebread and Sarah (?), circa 1640; The evidence for the daughter Mary who married John Grout is given by Mary Walton Ferris, who cites a petition in which John Grout refers to Thomas Cakebread as his father-in-law [Dawes-Gates 1:663-64, reproducing the original petition]. (Savage had these marriages completely wrong, as did many other writers.)
As Ferris also notes, "If the early claim that Mary, first wife of Ens. John Grout and Anne first wife of James Cutler were sisters, can be proved, it means that Anne was another daughter of Thomas and Sarah (_____) Cakebread" [Dawes-Gates 1:663]. This claim appears only in the secondary literature, and seems unlikely, since the entire estate of Thomas Cakebread seems to have ended up in the hands of John Grout.1
Capt John Grout married Sarah Busby, daughter of Nicholas Busby and Bridget Cocke, circa 1643. Capt John Grout died on 25 July 1697 at Sudbury, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts. His estate was probated on 16 August 1697; Will was written 24 Jul 1697.
John Grout was in Watertown by 1640 and of Sudbury by 1663. He purchased 12 acres from Thomas Cakebread and he and wife, Mary, moved there the same year.
He organized the town militia, ultimately attaining the rank of captain. Politically, he served as selectman for thirty years between 1687 and 1692. Additionally, he served as the town clerk for seven years. In 1696, he was ordered to Boston, Massachusetts to discuss the Indian tribes around Sudbury with governor John Leverett and the council.

Grout's fame rests primarily from an event that occurred on April 20, 1676 during King Philip's War. 500 to 1,500 Indians attacked Sudbury, destroying much of the town. Captain Grout, then about sixty years old, and a few of his men held the Indians in check for about three hours until reinforcements arrived.2
