According to the 1982 journal put out by the Chateauguay Valley Historical Society [p. 12], there were many "lines stores" which kept the liquor trade flourishing even though there was no licensed tavern in Franklin. To illustrate how prevelent it was, as well as question its quality, the article told of how Elisha Covey, in 1872, "was found dead near his home some four days after he had been missing. He had been last seen buying a quart of firewater at McCoy's Store at the Frontier Lines".
