     Jonathan Sherman was born on 18 July 1763 at Grafton, Worcester Co, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of Asaph Sherman.1 Jonathan Sherman married Thankful Smith, daughter of Moses Smith and Lydia Smith, on 20 December 1787 at Hubbardston, Worcester Co, Massachusetts; The marriage entry was written as Jonathan Sheerman.2 Jonathan Sherman died on 9 February 1846 at Barre, Washington Co, Vermont, at age 82; The copied death record (created 24 Dec 1919) lists his parents incorrectly as Thankful and Jerusha. It also mentions he was a Revolutionary War soldier.3 He was buried at Wilson Cemetery, Barre, Washington Co, Vermont.3
     As townlore goes, Barre, Vermont was named by Jonathan Sherman. There is a sign in Barre saying, "At a town meeting held at this site September 3, 1793 occurred a fight between Jonathan Sherman of Barre, Mass., and Capt. Thompson of Holden, Mass. for the privilege of naming the town. Sherman won and named the town Barre."
