Jonathan Sherman

     Jonathan Sherman was born on 18 July 1763 at Grafton, Worcester Co, Massachusetts.¹ He was the son of Asaph Sherman.¹ Jonathan Sherman married Thankful Smith, daughter of Moses Smith and Lydia Smith, on 20 December 1787 at Hubbardston, Worcester Co, Massachusetts; The marriage entry was written as Jonathan Sheerman.² Jonathan Sherman died on 9 February 1846 at Barre, Washington Co, Vermont, at age 82; The copied death record (created 24 Dec 1919) lists his parents incorrectly as Thankful and Jerusha. It also mentions he was a Revolutionary War soldier.³ He was buried at Wilson Cemetery, Barre, Washington Co, Vermont.³
     As townlore goes, Barre, Vermont was named by Jonathan Sherman. There is a sign in Barre saying, "At a town meeting held at this site September 3, 1793 occurred a fight between Jonathan Sherman of Barre, Mass., and Capt. Thompson of Holden, Mass. for the privilege of naming the town. Sherman won and named the town Barre."
