Francis Eugene Guertin

     Francis Eugene Guertin was born on 12 March 1840 at Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.^1,2 He was the son of Alexander Guertin and Mary Courville. Francis Eugene Guertin married Matilda Jane Patterson on 9 October 1869 at Alburgh, Grand Isle Co, Vermont; Matilda's obituary mentions they were married 26 Sept 1865 at Clarenceville.³ Francis Eugene Guertin died in 1923 at Iowa.^4,2 He was buried at Gilman Cemetery, Ashton, Osceola Co, Iowa.⁵
     He appeared on the census of 1871 at Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec; Eugene Guertin, 30, Jane, 26, Edgar, 4, Jesse, 2 and Alice, 6 mos; also in the household were Eugene's father, Alexander Guertin, 78, and Nancy, 78, both widowed. Eugene was listed as Catholic, but Matilda and children were listed as Church of England.⁶ He appeared on the census of 18 June 1880 at Goewey, Osceola Co, Iowa; Eugene Guertin, 39, Jane M., 34, Edgar, 12, Jessie, 10, Alice, 9, Arlin, 7, Emery, 6, Ada, 5, Frederic, 3, Eugene, 1, and Edna, 1 month; born April.⁷ He appeared on the census of 18 April 1910 at Silver Lake, Dickinson Co, Iowa; Francis E. Guertin, 70, Matilda J., 64, Nellie L., 23, John N., 21, and Earl E., 18.⁸ He and Matilda Jane Patterson appeared on the census of 1920 at Lake Park, Dickenson Co, Iowa; Lydia Wood, 56, widow, b. Illinois, Eugene Guertin, 79 and Miltalde, 73, both b. Canada, came to the US in 1879 and were naturalized in 1881.⁹
