John Francis Sanders was born on 10 July 1919. He was the son of Fred Sanders and Abigail Tirzah Wilkins. John Francis Sanders died on 15 February 1943 at age 23.
John Francis Sanders was lost at sea after his ship, the M.S. Atlantic Sun, was torpedoed off the coast of Newfoundland. He had been a machinist first-class in the Merchant Marine and received the Mariner's Medal posthumously for heroic conduct. He was very tall - 6'7" and had been named for Major General John Francis O'Ryan, having been born during the First World War.
