Thomas Wait was born before 13 June 1612 at Alford Lines, Lincolnshire, England.1 He was christened on 13 June 1612 at Alford, Lincolnshire, England.1 He was the son of Richard Wait and Margaret Carter.1 Thomas Wait married Eleanor (?) circa 1640.1 Thomas Wait died before 13 September 1665 at Portsmouth, Newport Co, Rhode Island.1 He was buried on 13 September 1665 at Portsmouth, Newport Co, Rhode Island.
Thomas Wait came to Plymouth in 1634 along with his brothers, Richard and Gamaliel, who settled in Boston. According to the book "Thomas Wait and His Descendants of Portsmouth, RI", tradition had dictated that the three brothers had been driving cattle to market when they ran into a Press Gang. They escaped, sold their cattle and boarded a ship for Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Supposedly, they were cousins of Thomas Wait who was a member of Parliament and one of those judges who signed the death warrant for Charles the First. Some believe that all Waits descend from Ralf de Waiet. Ricardus Le Wayte was Escheator of the counties of Bedford, Berkshire, Bucks, Oxford and Wilts in 1315 - he was of County Warwick. Another descendant, Ralf De Waiet was the son of Ralf an Englishman by a Welsh woman and married Emma, sister to Roger, Earl of Hereford, cousin to William the Conquerer. He was given the Earldom and Castle of Norwich by William the Conquerer in 1575. Our Thomas Wait may be the same Thomas Wait who was the sixth son of Samuel Wait and Mary Ward of Wethersfield, County Essex, England.
Thomas Wait was granted land in Portsmouth, Rhode Island 1 July 1639, and was given further lots in 1644 and 1646. He was made a Freeman 16 March 1641, was chosen Constable 7 June 1658 and in 1663.
The estate of Thomas Wait was divided by the Portsmouth Town Council among his wife Eleanor, and his children. This document was located in the winter of 1913-1914 in the cellar of the Town House of Portsmouth, leaving no doubt as to his children's names. Joseph had died previously and was not named.
The name "Wait" was spelled many different ways over the years, and is supposedly derived from the High German "Wahten", meaning to keep watch.1
