     James Bate was baptized on 2 December 1582 at Lydd, Kent Co, England. He was the son of James (John) Bate and Mary Martine. James Bate and Alice Glover obtained a marriage license on 13 September 1603 at Kent Co, England. James Bate died before 8 January 1655/56 at Dorchester, Suffolk Co, Massachusetts.
     According to Colket's "Early American Families" [1985], James and his brother Clement both arrived in this country in 1635 aboard the "Elizabeth". James was listed as a husbandman. They departed London on 17 Apr 1635 for America, and settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts. The first mention of James receiving land here was 18 February 1635/6. He was also listed as freeman in the Massachusetts Colony in December of that same year.
