Thomas Huckins
M, b. 1617, d. 9 November 1679
| Relationship | 10th great-grandfather of Pamela Joyce Wood |
Thomas Huckins was born in 1617 at England. He married Mary Wells in 1642. Thomas Huckins married Rose ? (?) on 3 November 1648 at Barnstable, Barnstable Co, Massachusetts. Thomas Huckins died on 9 November 1679; drowned with his son Joseph after their boat was lost during a storm.
According to Otis's "Genealogical Notes of Barnstable Families", Thomas Huckins came over before he was 21 years old, and lived in Boston, or more likely, Dorchester. He was one of the 23 original members of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company which was chartered in 1638. It was quite an honor to be an ensign of that company, and would point to the idea that he was associated with influential families.
Thomas Huckins held many offices and was constable and named a freeman in 1646. He was a Selectman in 1668, 1670-2, 1674-5, 1677-8, deputy to the colony court 1669-72, 1674-5, 1677-8. In addition to these, he was a member of juries, was a surveyor of highways, licensed to sell wines and spirits, and was an auditor for the colony accounts. On 4 October 1675 Thomas Huckins was appointed Commissary General of the Colony and was in charge of procuring and forwarding supplies to soldiers engaged in the Indian war.
Many accounts are available on what an upstanding citizen Thomas Huckins was and of his abilities as a businessman.
