     Gilbert Tallman was born circa 1816 at Quebec.1 He was the son of Humphrey Tallman and Sarah Gilfillan. Gilbert Tallman married Emily J. Smith, daughter of Alpheus Smith and Katie Pickle. Gilbert Tallman died on 20 August 1889 at Harmony, Fillmore Co, Minnesota; His death certificate gives parents as James C. Tallman and Hannah...? No way of knowing who was the informant was -- wasn't listed on death certificate. Canada is listed as his father's place of birth which leads this writer to believe that the informant was someone who didn't have much background on Gilbert. If his wife was that person, which is likely, than it may be that she was confused.2 He was buried at Amherst, Fillmore Co, Wisconsin; Pat Clark found that he was buried at the poor farm but, unfortunately, the farm is now owned by someone who has patured cows and doesn't allow visitors to the property.2
     Gilbert Tallman appeared on the paylist of the 2nd Company of the Hemmingford Volunteers in November 1838. He appeared on the census of 1 June 1865 at Harmony, Fillmore Co, Minnesota; Gilbert Tallman was living with wife Emily, and children Gilbert, Joseph, Mary, Henry, Sarah and William.3 He appeared on the census of 18 July 1870 at Hale, Trempealeau Co, Wisconsin; Gilbert Tallman, 54, b. Can, Emily, b. NY, Frederick, 7, b. Can. Next Households were Joseph Tallman, 22, and wife Sarah, and Humphrey Tallman, wife Esther and daughter Edith.4 Land Patent records in Wisconsin show that Gilbert Tallman was issued 80 acres in Township 23, North of Range Seven West, Trempealeau County on 20 January 1874.5 He appeared on the census of 2 June 1880 at Hale, Trempealeau Co, Wisconsin; Gilbert Tallman, 63, b. Canada, and Emily J, 59, b. Vermont. Gilbert listed his father as born Massachusetts and his mother in New York.6 He and Emily J. Smith appeared on the census of 9 May 1885 at Harmony, Fillmore Co, Minnesota; Gilbert Tallman, aged 68, b. Canada and Emily J. Tallman, aged 64, b. Vermont.7
