Wait Vaughan was born circa 1756 at New Fairfield, Fairfield Co, Connecticut.1 He was the son of Josephus Vaughan and Rebecca Towner. Wait Vaughan died in 1782 at Quaker Hill, Dutchess Co, New York; According to Herb Derick, in a letter dated 9 February 1990, Wait Vaughan was "treacherously killed at the end of the war". Supposedly, according to one account on FindAGrave, Wait and a band of men were called the "Cowboys" because they robbed farmers of their cattle and sheep and sold them in the city for profit. Quaker Hill became known as Vaughan's "rendezvous" and the Pearce family had been robbed. Capt Pearce and other men open-fired on Wait and his men as they rested, when Wait was fatally wounded. He was carried to John Toffey's house, and after death was buried outside the Toffey Burial Ground beside the brook in the heart of Quaker Hill.1,2
