Philo Hurlbut was born circa 1754 at Woodbury, Litchfield Co, Connecticut.1 He was the son of Daniel Hurlbut. Philo Hurlbut was baptized on 24 March 1754 at Woodbury, Litchfield Co, Connecticut.1 He married Mary Friot before 1795. Philo Hurlbut died before 1801.
Philo Hurlbut is mentioned as one of those who rescued Remember Baker from NY authorities during the strife between Vermont and New York in 1773. During that time he had lived at Arlington, Vermont
Philo Hurlbut was a Captain in Jessup's Rangers in 1777 (Haldimand Papers, P.B. 161, p.403). Correspondence with Herb Derick in the 1980's mentions frequently that Philo was in charge of a whaling boat that took troops from Sorel and other places to Baie les Chaleurs (Gaspe) in 1784.2 On 5 July 1800, Philo Hurlbut was listed on a large list of 700 settlers listed for admittance as associates in 33 townships. He was listed for Stanstead.
