Thomas Hurlbut was born circa 1610. He was the son of Richard Hurlbut and Ann Bower. Thomas Hurlbut married Sarah (?).1 Thomas Hurlbut died after 12 October 1671 at Wethersfield, Hartford Co, Connecticut.2
Thomas Hurlbut came to America in 1635, supposedly as a sailor with Lion Gardiner, who built the fort at Saybrook, Connecticut. Gardiner sailed from London on 11 August 1635 on the "Bachilor", along with his wife , a female servant and eleven male passengers. They arrived at Boston the 28th of November 1635. Gov. Winthrop supposedly told another they Gardiner sailed 10 July 1635 in a vessel from the Norwegian coast. Either way, the year was 1635.
At this point (1997), I have seen no proof at to the parents of Thomas Hurlbut.
In 1637, while he was in Saybrook with Gardiner, Thomas Hurlbut had an encounter with the Pequot Indians, and was wounded. In Gardiner's account of the skirmish, Thomas and another were acting as sentinels, while Gardiner and others were burning weeds after clearing some trees. Indians were soon upon them and they were "exchanging many a shot, so that Thomas Hurlbut was hot almost through the thigh, John Spencer in the back into his kidneys, myself into the thigh, two more shot dead. But in our retreat, I kept Hurlbut and Spencer still before us, we defending ourselves with our naked swords..."
Thomas Hurlbut was a blacksmith by trade, and he established a business after settling in Wethersfield, following the war with the Pequots. He appears to have been a man of good standing within the community. He received several tracts of land and was Deputy to the General Court, Grand Juror and a Constable in 1644. It is assumed he died soon after 12 October 1671, when he was granted an additional 120 acres for his services in the war with the Pequots, since the land was never actually set off to him [History of Ancient Wetherfield, Vol. II, by Stiles, pages 442-4].3
