John Munday Dean

     John Munday Dean was born on 29 October 1845 at Leeds, Yorks, England. He was the son of James Dean and Sarah Munday. John Munday Dean married Mary Ann Fullon Dudley, daughter of John Dudley and Maria Gledhill, on 21 May 1870 at St Peters, Leeds, Yorks, England; John was 24 years old, of Front Row, and Mary Ann was 21, of Quarry Hill.^1,2 John Munday Dean died on 30 July 1918 at Putnam, Windham Co, Connecticut, at age 72.³ He was buried at Grove Street, Putnam, Windham Co, Connecticut.³
     He immigrated in 1876 to New York; John Mundy Dean, 30, is listed on the manifest for the ship "City of Richmond" arriving in New York 8 May 1876. He was listed as a labourer.⁴ John left his wife and two young children in England for a short time. He worked in New Jersey and Lowell, Massachusetts before establishing his own business in 1899, The John Dean Co., manufacturers of textile pins, phonograph needles and pointed wire goods. The business was moved to Putnam, Connecticut in 1910. John Munday Dean retired in 1917 and the business was sold to General Industries, Inc.
John's two sons, Charles and John Jr., and his daughter Rhoda, remained active in the business. In 1963, the family purchased the business back again and it was run successfully until 1971. The business was again sold, but held the name of John M. Dean, Inc.⁵ He was naturalized on 23 September 1886 at Boston, Suffolk Co, Massachusetts; The Naturalization record gave his birthdate as 30 Oct 1845.⁶
